It been a long time coming

My little boy was delivered at 28 weeks weighing 2lbs 9.5 oz due to me having the HELLP syndrome :( Wednesday marks 8 weeks that he has been in the NICU weighing in now at 5lbs 9oz. I have been asked to bring in his carseat for the carseat test and I am hoping I am given what day he will be released this week!

My question is how many of you bottle feed your breastmilk to measure the amount your baby is intaking instead of breastfeeding at night?? II am wondering if he is still too little to only breastfeed because of the amount of calories he will burn doing so?

  • Aiden was discharged from the nicu at 35 weeks gestation, weighing 4 lbs 10 oz.

Even though our due date is this friday, he still will not latch. We have had a few successes with the nipple shield but he prefers the bottle because it is what he is use to and its easier.

I am exclusively pumping and we do have to give him a multivitamin twice a day in his bottles.

It is nice to know how much he is getting with the bottle and trust me, he has plenty of wet diapers and stools.

  • Congratulations! That's exciting news :) If you're successfully BF'ing that's a major deal coming out of NICU. I wouldn't mess it up by giving bottles just to measure the amt unless instructed to by your drs. My son wound up nipple confused due to NICU and it was a hot mess straightening that out! He'd tucker and one feed led to another so BF'ing felt constant but I think that's normal. His diapers were wet so I knew he was getting enough even though I (like most moms) had become obsessed with numbers.

Congratulations!!! I remember how great it was for us to bring the carseat in for the carseat test! It is definitely a milestone!

I think that it matters on whether or not they are gaining weight.  You might want to use the bottles while in the NICU until you can get home and then get the ok from your pedi regarding breastfeeding.  However, your son may have problems with nipple confusion, etc.  Our daughter needs Neosure every 2 feeds because of the extra calories, and so since we have to use bottles anyway, we just feed her breastmilk using that.

  • I EBF my 28 week twins when they came home with the exception of 1-2 bottles a day for giving poly-vi-sol.  I began BFing in the NICU when they were still under 5 lbs.  It would take them a long time to nurse at first but their weight gains were great in the beginning, so it worked out fine for us.
