Anyone give their LO oatmeal baths for dry skin? UPDATE

A has really really dry skin so I gave her an oatmeal bath tonight. Has anyone tried these on their LO and had any luck?

ETA: A's skin is SO much better this morning. I know most of you said it works for a few days but the difference is amazing. And she slept an extra hour this morning! Not sure if it's a coincidence but I have to imagine her skin feels better, so thy certainly didn't hurt her sleep! Going to get some Hydrolatum today too!

  • I have not but can recommend Hydrolatum cream for your LO. It is the ONLY thing that worked for J's super dry skin. It is not prescription but in my town they keep it behind the pharmacy counter. $11 for a large tub. GL!

We did it once and saw improvement the next day. The dryness seemed to go away for a couple days but by then, he needed a real bath to clean him and that just caused the dryness to return.

Instead, we just lather regularly each morning and night with Aquafor.

  • I haven't had to give one to O but I have pretty bad eczema on my legs and have taken them myself and they do help. The effects tend to last a few days but most times I can moisturize enough to be ok before the bath wears off.

  • I have, both when DD has had bad diaper rashes and/or patches of eczema on her skin. It worked really well.

  • Thanks! Glad to hear it does help. We lather her morning and night in Aquaphor and lotion and it hasn't been helping. I will definitely try the hydrolatum too.

Thanks for the tip.  We've either tried/are trying Aquaphor, California Baby Calendula Cream, Earth Mama/Angel Baby lotion, hydrocortisone, prescription cream...with varying degrees of success, but I can never KEEP him eczema-free.  I'll try this next...sounds promising!

  • Hey there, just chiming in as I haven't had to give my girls an oatmeal bath, yet, but my girlfriend's son was recently diagnosed with severe eczema and she was told to do the oatmeal baths.  Having tried it on him once and it being a total disaster (messy) she found that you can make your own oatmeal bath by putting it into a stocking.  You can Google it to find the "how-to".  Also, DH suffers from really bad eczema on his face and after years of trying different solutions (short of keeping up with a prescription because he doesn't have the patience to keep going back to derm), the last doctor he talked about told him to use Cetaphil Restoraderm which has really cleared it up.

  • It definitely helps when DD has eczema flare ups.  I either grind the oatmeal in a food processor so that it is almost a powder or put it in an old sock.  If you grind it up, it makes it pretty much dissolve in the water.

I probably should have made it myself but I just bought the Aveeno colloidal oatmeal bath.
