Road trip shortly after c-section? Advice needed on recovery

Hi ladies! I had a vaginal birth with my daughter so I'm not sure what the c-section recovery would be like, but I might end up with one since I just found out this baby is breech. I know I have time for it to turn back and I am hoping that it does, but I'd like a little advice just in case it doesn't turn and I end up with a c-section.

DH and I live in London, but travel to his parents' home in Ireland to have our babies. It worked out great last summer with our daughter and we will do it again, but it involves a long road trip. My concern is about how long I will have to stay in Ireland after a c-section. I know everyone's recovery is different and a planned one tends to be easier than an emergency (from what I have heard). I'd just like to get a rough idea from you ladies.

The trip involves a 2 hour drive to Dublin, a 2-3 hour ferry ride (depending on what ferry we take), then a 2 hour drive to a hotel. We stay in a hotel over night, then have a 4-5 hour drive into London, stopping to feed the kids and rest of course. DH will do all of the driving so I'll really just be sitting the whole time. Would you say I might be able to do this 4-5 weeks after the birth? I really don't want to stay any longer than that unless it's necessary.

Thanks!

Re: Road trip shortly after c-section? Advice needed on recovery

  • I'm 5 weeks after c/s right now. I've had a fairly easy recovery and feel like the trip you described would be tiring but doable. Most of the difficulty would be related to traveling with 2 small children. I felt mostly quite good by 3 weeks. As long as you don't overdo it (careful with not lifting too much), I think you could do it. GL!

That trip 4-5 weeks post c section should be doable, although I wouldn't want to do it any sooner. Good luck!
  • At 4-5 weeks I think that would be pretty doable. I was pretty much back to normal at that point. 4-5 days no way.

  • It's exactly 4 weeks after my c-section for me, and I would say that I could definitely do the trip.  However, I would find it pretty exhausting.

Mostly because, as a pp mentioned, having to travel with two children, one of them a newborn who still has a crazy schedule.

     Good luck!

  • I agree w/pp- barring any complications you should be "fine" physically at 4-5 weeks (from the c-section).  You'll be in the thick of no-sleep-you-know-what, though!  Depending on the size of the car, you might choose to sit in the back w/the kids so you don't spend the entire time turned around, trying to tend to them from the front seat.  This would also minimize stress on your incision site.  GL!

  • I would have had no issue, we took a 4 hour road trip at 2 weeks since my MIL was having health problems, and it wasn't bad.

I would just say take your time on the return trip.

  • It's definitely doable and I don't think a c/s would effect it at all, it's just that it would suck to be sitting for that amount of time IMO (not because of the c/s though).
  • I took a 12hr road trip that we did in one day when I was 6 1/2-7wks PP with DS. I had already had my 6wk check-up and was cleared to go by my OB (didn't matter we were going anyway). The only thing that I would think your doc may be concerned about after having a c/s (being that it is major surgery) is your risk of forming blood clots from sitting for too long, but it looks like you'll be up and moving around every couple hours so you should be fine with that.

I agree w/pp's though that the difficulty may be more with traveling with 2 LO's. When we took our trip my DS pretty much ate every 3-4hrs and slept the rest of the way and we had my stepDD with us but she was 11 y/o so she was actually more of a help. Good luck!! I'm sure it will be fine!

  • We had to fly out of state and then spent a lot of time in the car house shopping when DS was three weeks old. I was fine the whole time, but DS hated, I mean HATED being in the car so much.

The Nest/Bump sucks and won't let me change my location. I'm in Arkansas, not Florida.
  • I' m 7 wks PP and would have had no problems doing that- I've been out and about since 2 weeks PP and was completely back to normal (except sleep of course). DD loves the car and sleeps great in her carseat, its my 2 year old who would be more of the pain to travel with!
