Moms of girls - Re: Birthday tutus

I have no idea what to buy DD for her birthday outfit. All I see are these tutu combinations. They are quite adorable, although a little over frilly for my taste (but I'm also not the one turning 1). Cake

I guess my question is, do you think it'll be comfortable if we went that route? I mean, she's not walking (I know this could change in a month), so she'll be trying to sit and crawl around in that thing. Or is this just for a couple pictures and it comes off? I saw one that I'd be willing to do because I like the little shirt....but seems expensive to do if she's not really going to wear the whole thing. Thoughts or other outfit suggestions? Btw, holy crap!! - our kids are turning 1 so SOON!!

  • I actually made DD a tutu yesterday.  It was super easy and really cheap.  I spent about $20 on supplies but bought way too much tulle.  I could probably make 3 more tutu's with all the tulle I bought.

She's also going to wear a onesie with a iron on decal that I bought on Etsy (for $4).  It's a cupcake with a number 1 on top.  I'm also making her a fabric covered party hat.  Just have to find her shoes and she's good to go.

Oh and the tutu is too puffy so she'll be able to move (although she still doesn't crawl or walk yet).

  • I got this dress for DD to wear at her birthday party:

I'm waiting on a fuschia headband, and I still need to find shoes.  I'm having trouble with deciding what she will wear for her professional pics a couple weeks after her birthday...  I think the outfit you linked is super cute though!

  • I can't find a picture of it, but she will be wearing a blk/red tutu with a t-shirt that has a lady bug on it. The theme we are going with is a lady bug theme and I figured she will only wear it for a little while and 1 yoa pictures.
  • I made a super adorable Tutu for O that is black and red with ladybug on it. It is amazing I am posting from my phone so I will post a pic later. It was very was to make and cost way less than buying one.

  • I haven't picked an outfit yet, but Lexi struggles to crawl in any kind of dress or skirt that goes past her knees. I'm hoping to find a cute tunic/leggings type outfit. I want her to be able to play freely!

See, that's what I mean. The tutus are cute and all but I highly doubt she'll be able to play/move in it well - unless it's the really short ones. I've been doing a little more looking but haven't found anything right yet... :(

Here is the one I made, its a bit on the long side but because it has lots of thin "strips" of tulle she seems to be able to walk in it and play pretty ok.

  • i'm not buying anything special.  she'll just wear something she already has that will be easy to crawl/toddle around in and that can be washed (since i'm sure it will get covered in cake)

Good idea, I completely forgot that once she has cake she'll be a mess.  We're doing it at a hall so I'll need to pack another outfit...

Too funny that you posted this. I was just looking at one VERY similar from Mud Pie. The one you posted is much cuter and functional looking!

I love the one above...so cute!  DD will be wearing a ruffle butt bloomer (I had the etsy owner make the ruffles all the way around, however), a onesie with a "1" on it and leggings, no shoes.  I felt the same way about the tutu's.  So cute, but DD hates wearing dresses and skirts because she's can't crawl in them easily.  They are super cute for pictures though.  My mom made the onesie, so I had her make two just in case one gets filthy with pictures or the day of the party. She will be wearing just a diaper for cake time.

  • I got DD a Hello Kitty onesie with a pink tutu. She's got matching Hello Kitty shoes too. I'm thinking of throwing some pink baby legs on her as well. We've also got the Carters 1st Birthday dress from a friend. I'm honestly not worried about it getting in her way for playing, I doubt it would stop her. I'm still debating whether I should get her an over the top hat, they are sort of expensive and I would fail if I tried to make my own.
    This is my AE.

  • Not my thing. K has shown that she hates fluffy dresses and certain materials. Because of the material that most tutus are made of, that rules them out for now. We've got her a really cute FAO Schwartz outfit we caught on clearance at BRU and she'll be wearing that for pics, and then changing into her swimsuit later.
