Verifi Prenatal Test instead of CVS

I am anxiously awaiting the results of my blood test. I was going to have the CVS, as I will be 39 when I deliver in November. BUT when I went to my Dr to make the appt, he told me of a NEW blood test JUST released in the USA in March. It has been around in Europe a while....

It is called Verifi, and it is 99.8% accurate for Downs Syndrome. NO RISK to the baby as the test is a simple BLOOD DRAW. It is not yet covered by my insurance ($$$$$) and the wait time for the results is 8-11 DAYS! I am dying over here!!!!! Anyone else have this test?

Re: Verifi Prenatal Test instead of CVS

  • I did MaterniT21 which was just approved in February for screening of all three trisomy's.  Accuracy rates are published as the same and I had a 7 day wait, including the weekend, which I thought was quite a fast turnaround.  It is hard waiting, but hang in there!  It's worth it if you are trying to avoid an invasive test.  The negative results I had from this test combined with the first trimester screen and NT scan numbers made me much more confident and made it an easy decision to forego CVS.

  • THANKS! I am trying to stay positive. But, I am NOT a good "waiter" LOL

I didn't have the first trimester screening tests. I figured I'd cut right to the chase. I already knew my chances were high due to my "advanced age".

    CONGRATS on your healthy pregnancy!

  • My SIL did this test recently (her ultrasound had a soft marker, her "risk ratio" was 1:35). Her insurance partially covered the test, so it was "only" $300 (vs the $1000 it would ahve been out of pocket, per her dr's office). Happily, her results came back negative last week.

  • I did the amnio but I totally know the wait sux! It took 15 long days to get the results. Good luck and try to keep your mind busy (if possible)!

My provider recommended that I still do the first trimester screen, especially the NT scan as the blood tests, though very accurate, are not yet a replacement for those screens.  I'm not good at waiting either, but having both of those results from two very different independent tests really put my mind to ease as I too was concerned about the high risk.  Just food for thought.

Hang in there and stay busy - the results will come in before you know it!

  • please check you data on the verify test i think the Maternit21 data was superior to the verify

    imo

  • I never commented on which test was better. As a matter of fact I was only aware of the Verifi until I joined this community. My data came from the company's webpage as that is what was given to me by my Dr.

Thank you everyone else for your support and understanding. I certainly don't need ome more thing to worry about ;-P

  • CONGRATS to SIL !!!!! :)
  • I had the Verifi test as well.  We were "persuaded" by the Dr. to have this done over an amnio and there were definitely benefits:  zero potential harm to the baby and I didn't have to have a huge needle in my belly (I have a terrible fear of needles that lead into anxiety attacks so this was a blessing!).

From my research all of these new blood only tests were approved in February and the providers are having issues with insurance companies denying all the claims.  Our claim was denied and the cost is marked at $1200!!  Verifi peeps said out of cost to patients would be no more than $495 and they would refile with our insurance (BCBS) to try to get the appeal.  We felt pressured to have the Verifi test vs the amnio by our Dr and the Dr office is denying any fault for the claim denial.  They told me I am responsible for all lab work at the beginning of the pregnancy.  And up until now, all lab work was performed in-network.  We had no idea Verifi was out of network for our provider, and now we have a hefty bill looming over our heads when if we had gotten the amnio done, we would have been totally covered by insurance.

Anyone else have insurance claims denied b/c this blood test is so new?

  • I just received a statement from my insurance listing the $1200 charge since they denied coverage... wondering how the process goes for getting Verifi's listed lower price?  ugg...

  • Hi

I will be 38 by the time I have my baby and I was advised by the doctor to do verifi as well.  I think though it costs $900 here in Oz (I'm in Sydney) it is worth it and I know when I do mine in 1.5 weeks I will be anxiously waiting for my results.... and know the sex of the baby!!!!  :)  Good luck with it and I am all for this test even though it costs money now.  Hopefully health insurance will cover it soon.

This is an OLD thread (from 2012). There are lots of newer threads with more current information about the test and its costs. Lots of health insurance plans cover this now in the US for high-risk women. And I understand that if the test is not covered, the companies offer a much lower rate to customers (like $200, from what I've seen here on TB).

  • I did Panorama this time. It was completely covered by my insurance. I did MaterniT21 the last time, it was not covered at all. Since it had just come out 4 months prior, insurance companies deemed it to be experimental. This was in 2012 though.

  • @verorico‌ Veronica, there are places that can just draw lab work... but I think this test has to be set up through a doctor, they send a special kit with the blood tube. Good luck, not sure you can do this very easily across borders and in just a week.
