36 week appt- baby is breech!

I am so shocked! We went in for our routine 36 week appt, the last one before the delivery most likely, and we were shocked to learn that the baby is now breech. At 34 weeks he was head down and perfect, and has been in that direction the whole pregnancy.

Now that I know though it seems kinda obvious since I have had a large pain under my right rib for about 2 weeks and there was a huge bump there, which we assumed was the baby's feet since we didnt think he would turn on his own after 34 weeks. But nope- it was his darn head that has been pushing into my ribs ha.

I know there are techniques to turn the baby, and I have been trying the at home methods, but  nothing has worked yet (although we did find out only yesterday so maybe they will help over time).

I really dont want to have to have a c-section.  Just venting. It was really frustrating since we had this whole vision of how the delivery would go and now everything might be totally different, from a scheduled due date to a different kind of delivery all together.  Why did the baby have to move just when he was getting too big to move back!!!  (My husband joked that we already have a jokster on our hands).

Also, anyone know of people who went into natural labor with a breech baby? I am not sure if the fact that it is his feet rather than his head pressing on the cervix that this lowers the chance of having the labor start without the large head pressure.

  • Aw man! No fun! But here's a little something that maybe might make ya feel a teeny bit better -- DD#1 was breech the entire time! Never turned, didn't want to. FINALLY on her own (I didn't do any of the techniques or anything) at my 38 week check up - she had flipped on her own. I know it's wishful thinking, but it can happen! So don't lose hope!!

    Good Luck!

  • My nephew was breech adn then at 37 weeks he turned head down.  My sister in law as in pre-term labor on bed rest for 8 weeks with him. She delivered him vaginally.

My friends son was head down and turned breech not sure when her son was head down at her 39 week appointment and then she went into labor on her due date and when they checked her at the hospital he was breech adn his foot was right there she ended up having an emergency c-section.

  • My baby was breech at 36 weeks, so I scheduled an appointment with a doctor in the practice who was supposedly the best at "turning" babies.  The appointment was 2 days after the ultrasound -- the baby had already turned back head down on its own.

So don't freak out; there's still time for the baby to turn.  You also might want to look into versions (when a doctor/midwife turns the baby) or chiropractic care, which was also recommended to me by my midwife.
