Have a baby with no epidural or be put completely under for a c-section? Because those look like my options I had platelet issues with DS and was induced and able to get an epi but ended up with a c-section because he got stuck. This time around platelets are lower than before so its not looking good. I can't be induced because of the previous section so unless she comes on her own before platelets drop too much, I'm left with 2 crappy options. If I knew it was going to be a short labor, I think I would try naturally over another surgery but what if its a long a hard labor? (I labored for 24 hrs with DS before we went into surgery) I am really stressing over this

My recommendation would be definitely baby with no epidural which I've done 5 times. C-sections take much longer to recover from. That is just my opinion. Some of my labors from start to finish were around 24 hours. The major labor for me - I guess transition - when it really gets rough was 5 hours or less every time.
But I did that with B already. I did have one dose of IV narcotics because my mind couldn't quite keep up with my body as the contractions deepened, but once that hump was over, I was back on track. Transition sucked and was hard for sure, but that was probably last hour or two of my 8 hour hospital labor.
C-section. Maybe I'm a wimp, but I thought contractions were BRUTAL and I think I might have died if I didn't have an epi. I also had pitocin which I think makes contractions worse. My epi wore off by the time I was ready to give birth, and thank God baby was on his way out.
I would try for the med free before opting to be put out. I've only been under once and woke up really early... I wouldn't want to take that chace with a C-section.
I think I would've died without my epidural, my contractions were so freaking rough!! I'd probably opt for the c-section then, but I'm kinda wimpy. Depends how much pain you can handle!
I would opt for the csection, but I'm also a wimpy one. I had a few hours of labor before they decided to do the csection and I don't think I could do it without an epi. But again I'm a wimp and decided I wanted the epi long before I went into labor.

I would do whichever one has the least complications for you & baby. I am confused, why would you be put completely under for the c-section? I had two C-sections & I was alert thru the entire process.I was alert enough to even have skin to skin.
I had low platelets with DS as well and around 35 weeks I was started on some steriods that helped get my platelet count up before I was induced at 37 weeks (and was able to get an epi).
But if for that some reason isn't an option your Dr. has brought up then I would go for the no epi labor. But surgery and being totally put under (espeically for the birth of my child) totally freaks me out.
Definitely a wimp here and would probably go with the c-section. I was induced with S and once contractions started it hurt like heII, so I can't imagine the pain of contractions and then pushing her out after all of that. I was exhausted from being in labor for 24 hours before my Dr. decided to do an emergency c-section...which I was thankful for at that point, but I was fully awake and just numbed, so I didn't miss getting to see her right away...even thought it was for a few brief moments before she was whisked to the NICU for resp. distress. There is no right or wrong here. You have to do what you feel most comfortable with. Whatever you choose, good luck.

Yikes. This is one of my biggest fears with any surgery.

DH woke up in the middle of having his wisdom teeth removed. I'm too much of a wimp to have a csection. I would go no epi but I have a high tolerance for pain. As pp said, there's no right or wrong. Do what makes you feel comfortable
Married my best friend 01/01/09
BFP#1 05/06/10. Jarebear born 12/29/10.
BFP#2 06/22/12 (DH's birthday). EDD 02/23/13. M/C and D&C 08/09/12
I would go no epidural. I fully admit I am a wimp, but I still tried for an epi-free birth. I went 9 hours and 8 cm before labor stalled, then I gave in and got an epi. After 14 hours in labor, I almost had to have a C-section. I did everything to prevent that (ended up with a tear, episiotomy, and having to use a vacuum). I would do anything to prevent a C-section. I'm very afraid of having one because I've heard so many stories where mama didn't see her baby for hours and recovery was rough. Plus, it's major surgery and anesthesia and I'd rather avoid that.

This. I didn't plan on having a natural birth, but I progressed quickly (from 4cm to 10cm in less than 2 hours) and missed my chance for an epi. I had an IV narcotic at 10cm before I started pushing because I couldn't mentally handle it.
My nurse told me that the hardest part were the contractions, and pushing is sooo much less painful. I doubted her, but she was absolutely right.

No epidural! You can do it! I'm a total puss, but I also hate needles so I opted to go totally med free, no IV or anything and I survived. I'm not gonna lie it hurt like a beast and I had horrendous back labor and a 2nd degree tear, but it is possible. And the 2nd time around is supposed to be faster. You should go for it!
Thanks for all the feedback! I can't have an epi if my platelets drop below the "safe zone" of which I am already borderline and still have 5 weeks to go. (Platelets control your bloods ability to clot so they can't have an epi or a spinal in your back, they have to put you completely under.) I tried steroids last time and it was completely unsuccessful so I can't rely on that. I did have a really good c-section experience so I know the recovery, risks, and what it entails, its being put under that scares me. If I knew the outcome of the VBAC, it would be an easier decision, I just don't want to labor for 24 hours+ again and then have her get stuck or some other complication and have to be put under anyway. All I can really do is pray that miraculously my numbers don't drop in the next 5 weeks!

I had an easy labor last time so I would vote for going drug free (even though I got an epi for the last cm and pushing) but maybe I'd say something different if I had had the delivery from hell. Overall, I'd say go for drug free...sometimes they do an emergency c-section if it's just not working so maybe you can just resort to that, but try for the med-free birth.
