Breastfeeding

Is it too late to start?

I had my baby girl last wednesday via vbac. With my DS my milk supply was very low and even after doing everything under the sun to increase it I still had to heavily supplement until he weaned himself at 4 months. When I was pg this time I decided I didn't want to go through that all again bc it was incredibly stressful for me and turned into a resentment of those first few months with DS. I always blamed my c/s for my low supply.

in the hospital with DD I started nursing and was having some anxiety about it. I stopped nursing the day after she was born (last thursday) and decided to just formula feed. Well, my milk came in on Saturday...I wasn't leaking or anything just very engorged. The engirgement has gone down but my breasts are still tender and harder than normal. Also this morning I woke up and had leaked a little.

I'm considering giving BFing another try....is it too late at this point? I definitely have milk bc I cans hand express it, but it's not pouring out or anything! I'm feeling a lot of guilt about not even trying especially since I fought so hard to do it with DS.

any advice would be great. Thanks!

Re: Is it too late to start?

  • given that women have been able to breastfeed adopted babies, I am sure you can probably start. I would see a LC in your area to help you get started etc. My guess is that retraining latch would be the biggest issue if supply isn't a problem.

  • It's definitely not too late! Given that it's only been a week since she was born I'd guess that you have a great chance of being able to at least partially breastfeed if not exclusively. If you want to EBF I think that's definitely possible, although it could be more of a challenge to get it to happen. Definitely track down a Lactation Consultant. The sooner you start latching the baby on, the better your chances of success.
  • Nope, it's not too late.  I pumped for 6 weeks before getting my LO to latch and directly breastfeed.  Go to a lact. consultant and go for it.  Good luck!
