Success after IF

If you were on lovenox during your preg, please come in.

hi -

looking for a little advice.

my lovenox injections are hurting more and more in my belly.  where else did you inject lovenox when you were pregnant?

thanks :)

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • I stuck to the belly, sorry :(. I did move farther and farther to the sides (read: love handles) and had DH do the injection so that the needle went straight in and wasn't at an angle.  Some girls here have recommended injecting super slowly, but I preferred it as fast as possible, like ripping off a bandaid.

  •  Congrats to you on your pregnancy!

I actually just started lovenox last week because I had a pulmonary embolism--- super scary! I have been icing the site for a minute before and after the injection and also going slowly. That seems to be helping but I am still getting mini bruises. I have only done the belly, I don't know if you can do it anywhere else because it isn't supposed to go into a muscle.

  • Congrats again.  Yes, it def got more painful, and bled more often, as I got farther along in my pregnancy.  Like pp I went farther and father out to the side, but I then got to a point, around 7 mos, I think) where I just couldn't grab enough skin to inject the shot into my belly.  My MFM recommended my thigh, the fattier part on the outside, if I remember correctly, and that seemed to work well.
  • I guess I'm a fatty because I always had some extra skin Sad

Actually, I did keep injecting into my stomach, I just moved around a lot.  I've heard that some women inject into their thighs but for some reason that just seems like it would hurt more than the stomach.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

This. I have no personal experience but I am a nurse who gives a TON of lovenox injections.  As long as you can pinch enough fat then I would recommend your thigh.  I have even used the back of the arm in really obese patients.

  • Here are my tips for (mostly) pain free lovenox injections (and I did them twice a day at the end of my pregnancy!)

Ice the injection site for up to a minute (be careful - you don't want to give yourself frostbite!  But ice it until the site is good and numb!)

Quickly swab site with alcohol - pinch some fat - and SLOWLY SLOWLY SLOWLY inject the Lovenox (releasing the pinch once needle is in your skin.)   I would push that plunger like, a millimeter at a time!  Somehow - this lets your body adjust to the different Ph of the Lovenox - so it doesn't burn going in.

Once done - one more swab of alcohol - and you're done!  You will still get some bruising - sometimes ugly - but this should cut down on your pain.  Also - once my belly got bigger - I injected almost exclusively into my "love handles."  I was convinced I was going to poke the baby in the eye (and I knew that was stupid.  But I was still convinced.)  Love handles seemed to hurt quite a bit less too.

    All the best to you!!!!

    Wheee!

  • Ditto PP's on the love handle injection site.  I had ugly, ugly bruises up until after I delivered ( had to stay on it for 6 wks after delivery, but came off for a few days during delivery).  I never tried the thigh, just pinched up as much as I could on my sides, and changed spots every time.  It definitely gets harder as your skin stretches and gets tighter.

Mainly, I just wanted to say how THRILLED I am for you!  I very much remember you from the IF boards, and have kept up with your journey.  Hugs to you, mama!!  What a blessing :):)

  • As the skin on my belly got tighter I would grab on my love handles.  :)

  • I did my belly (farther and farther out and down), back of arm, and upper thigh. Things just got rough. When I went in for one of my NSTs (towards the very end) the nurse asked me why I had like 20 bandaids all over my belly. It's because the skin was stretching, bleeding more, and when I took the bandaids off....skin often came with them :( I have deep scars from some of the bandaids now.

     Hang in there!!!

oh - one more thing - I got a prescription for lidocaine gel, and that really helped using the back of my arm.
