3rd Trimester

Our hospital has neat security feature for babies!!!

So DH and I went on the L&D tour last night at the hospital we are going to be delivering at, and they have what they call a HUGS system for security for the babies. Obviously only the Mom or Dad can get the baby out of the nursery, but if say one of the relatives is walking around with the baby and gets too close to the stairs or the elevators or any other means of exit, the system locks down all the doors and shuts down the elevators and sounds alarms until the baby is safely returned to the nursery. It is a transmitter type bracelet that they put on the baby's ankle like a tether, and I believe the Mom gets one too. It made us feel very good about someone just walking off with our baby and going unnoticed. :)

  • Ours has something very similar- and it plays a little jingle when the baby is placed back in our arms.. and an alarm when someone NOT mom or Dad goes towards exits.. it's very cool.

  • Ours does this too!  It is pretty reassuring.

  • Our hospital has something similar called Stork Alert with the ankle transmitter thing.

  • Cool! This was the first we had heard of it so it really put our mind at ease. Not that we have to worry about family, it is all the other weirdos out there that I worry about.

  • Ours has this as well... but they put a transmitter on babies left ankle and right wrist... I guess I dont understand the reasoning for that though...

but a very cool system in deed!!!

When I had my twins boys 2 years ago, they did not have this. I wonder if they do now?
  • Our hospital has a little transmitter-thing (how's that for technical) that is part of the little belly button clip.  It's supposed to be harder to remove than the arm/leg bracelet.  3 years ago when we had DD, she had the little baby lo-jack on her leg, and at 1 point a group came hustling into our room- it had gotten too loose somehow (she's still a little escape artist) and set off alarms at the nurse's station.  We were kind of surprised to see everybody, but glad to see they took it seriously.

During my 36-wk appt the maternity counselor spent some time talking about the alarm system and how to ID legitimate hospital staff.  Again, too bad they have to do this, but nice to know they take security seriously.

I thought so too? I know all 3 of the hospitals I have delivered at had it, even 8 years ago when ds was born.  I just hate how the sensors dig into  their little ankles.

  • the hospital i had my first with had this very same thing, the only thing that got me was we had to go straight past the elevators to get to the nursery lol, luckily we never set it off but it is very reasuring knowing that the babies are safe from baby-nappers.

  • funny story - our hospital has this as well and when we (baby and I) were being moved from L&D up to our room the nurses forgot to inform the system that we were moving.  When they were putting us on the elevator to go upstairs the alarms went off and we had to wait a few minutes for the hospital to come out of lock down mode.

It made me feel better seeing that the system actually works!

  • Our hospital in Florida had this when we had DS. Yes, they are wonderful peace of mind, but someone's always seemed to keep going off and it usually happened right after I had finally gotten to sleep. Also, keep an eye on LO bracelet. DS lost weight while in the hospital (like most babies do) and his slipped off a couple of times.

Good to know! Thanks for the heads up! :)

  • Ours has that too. My son was born at 34 weeks and was so tiny my husband kept maligning his ankle bracelet thing go off and the alarms and security would come running in. My nurse finally told him he could have the baby free and clear the next day when I was discharged and not to try and steal him today. :)

I think at my birthing class they said all hospitals have this feature.

Your birthing class is misinformed because my hospital does not have any alarm system in place.  Then again I live in the middle of no where, and the nearest hospital to me (after the one here in town) is nearly 2 hours away... Plus the baby will never leave my sight so I'm not worried.

  • Are hospital does not have this feature. We are in Albuquerque, never heard of it but it is awesome and believe it or not I thought about people walking off with my daughter with my last delivery so this would have been nice to have.

I think most hospitals are moving to systems like this. Ours has the HUGS system as well and I remember something similar with the hospital I delivered my daughter at.
