February 2012 Moms

starting cereal, thoughts and opinions.

My DD is going to be 3 months old on Wednesday. She is able to sit in a high chair, she pulls away from bottle/breast when she is full, and lately she has been waking more at night to eat. My mom, grandmother, and neighbor have all mentioned that they think she is ready for come rice cereal, even without me telling them what I just told you. However with DS I didn't not start anything until he was 4 months old and then I did rice cereal and I did that until he was 6 months then started other purees. I just worry that she is too young and as a nurse I was taught that babies don't digest food until they are 4 months old.

I know that I should go with my gut/instincts. Part of me wants to do it and another part of me doesn't. So I am just wanting to know your opinions.

TIA!

Honestly?  I think it's too young.  There is no need for her to be on anything other than BM right now.  She could be waking b/c she's going through a growth spurt and is hungry.

Another thing, I don't listen to my mom, grandmother and neighbor when it comes to making decisions for my baby :)  If you are considering it, consult your pedi and make your own decision but I would wait.

  • My DS will be 11 weeks on Wed and he has been on rice cereal for a few weeks now. It seems that everytime someone posts these they only get negative comments but I say go with your gut. Nobody knows your baby like you do, not even the pediatrician! My son was starving! I tried upping the ounces of formula but he would just throw it up. He was just restless and miserable. Just start out with a very small amount. I started with one teaspoon in a four ounce bottle and slowly increased it. He only gets it at night and once during the day to hold him over. He is now taking five ounces of formula with three teaspoons of cereal at night and a dour ounce bottle with two teaspoons if cereal at lunch during the day. Your main concerns will be a belly ache or constipation. If this happens you can cut back on the amount of cereal or stop and try again at a later time. I say go with your gut, momma! Good luck!

  • I was thinking that the waking in the middle of the night was a growth spurt, I meant to put that in there. She is not anymore fussy, just eating more (and I mean DOUBLE what she was), and waking at night. She also has been getting frustrated with my breast it seems I am wondering if it is because she will eat 2 4 oz bottles while I'm away at work for 1 feeding when she was only eating 1 4 oz bottle before.

  • Too young. It is recommended to EBF or FF for the first 6 months.

  • Always go with your gut (within reason, of course).  My mom thinks I'm nuts for numerous things, including making it a point to have the girls home in time for their last bottle and to be put to bed.  She thinks they go to bed too early (around 7:30) and that I should be teaching them to be more flexible.  My sister lives with my parents so my nephew has been raised with this "flexibility".  Last night my 3.5 month old girls slept through the night, something which my 8 month old nephew hasn't done.  Even if they think you're being overprotective and ridiculous just let them roll their eyes and go about your business.  If they really give you a hard time just say "Every baby is different.  You guys knew what was best for your babies, and I know what's best for mine.  Even if you think I'm nuts, just humor me for another few months".  Even if they think the cereal will help with STTN (and the cereal the girls are on for reflux had ZERO effect on their sleeping), YOU'RE the one who has to deal with the baby at night, not them.

  • Personally, I would wait, but your child is not my child.  Your gut will tell you what is right, but definitely do the research.  If you do decide to start cereal, get the whole grain version.  The white rice cereal is a straight simple carb - it is like feeding them sugar.

  • I started adding 1/8 tsp of ceral to LOs bedtime bottle- It has helped her sleep longer than 2-3 hrs and I feel so much better able to take care of her during the day because I am not exhausted-- also, she is much more pleasant during the day when she is well rested (DD refuses to nap during the day).
  • I EBF and don't own a pump. So giving cereal is not an option for me. But, personally, I wouldn't do it if I could. I think the healthiest approach is the way nature intended - for baby to EBF (or FF) until they are interested and can eat in solid foods. I don't think that there is any nutritional or medical reason to use cereal as a transition food.

I also agree with PP. I believe that it is the nutritional equivalent to feeding LO sugar.

This. I read something that made a lot of sense, why would your baby become more full on a simple carb vs milk filled with fat and protein. Also my dr said no earlier than 4 months and never in the bottle, but he also said younger babies can eat it when they have bad reflux etc. I wouldn't feed it to the baby just in hopes of getting them to sleep longer, but it's also not the worst thing in the world.

Oh, yes!  Ditto on the bottle thing.  Cereal should be fed as cereal (i.e. on a spoon).  Adding it to the bottle messes up their natural sense of how much food they need and can cause them to start overeating.

  • It is your choice. I dont see anything wrong with it,  SIL gave my nephew who had really bad reflux and would only keep an ounce down at a time cereal per doctor's orders starting at 3 weeks.  they were trying everything possible to get him to gain weight (he was a sick baby). So I dont see anything wrong with it even if your not to the 4-6 month mark. My doctor who is worried about my DD's weight gain also mentioned that if she doesnt start gaining we might start  cereal after her 3 month apt.

Go with your mommy gut. Give it a try if you feel it is right, if after you try it you want to go back to just formula  for whatever reason that is okay too!

  • I'd wait. It's just another thing to do ( cook/fix) for someone.. BF is so easy.

But you know your baby, if it does not help you can always stop and try again later.

  • That does make sense... My baby has reflux and I was told that I could put cereal in his bottle by the pedi. I did try it for two nights and it's a fact that it does not keep them full longer. My baby boy was still up every 2.5 to 3 hours. I decided to not give him the cereal because it made me uncomfortable and I don't think he is ready for that. I did ask for Zantac for my LO and that has seemed to help.

Just talk with your pedi about it. Ours put our son on it for one bottle at bed time, as of Friday, now 2 bottles a day. We put 1 tsp per every 2 ounces of formula. He eats great, but is slightly behind in his weight gain.Pedi isn't worried right now, but keeping an eye on it.
  • I would say it is too young. I have always been told four months for the same reason you mentioned.
