Cloth Diapering

What cloth diaper should I bring to show a potential daycare??

So I am a FTM and my little girl is due in July. I am visiting a daycare on Monday that has agreed to look at my cloth diapers to see if it's something the lady is comfortable doing. My little girl will be about 7 weeks old when she goes so I'm trying to figure out if we will still be using prefolds/covers or if she will be big enough for OS diapers? I have some Thirsties AIO I could bring or the prefolds/covers.

My shower isn't until June so I've been holding back on buying diapers...but I will be going to a city with a cloth diaper store this weekend so I could tell my husband we need to buy a few :) to show the daycare lady (I really really want to see cloth diapers in person as I've been online only so far). So should I buy some OS diapers to show the daycare?

Thanks in advance!!

  • I would bring what you have and see what she says.

We're using prestuffed velcro pockets at daycare... but that's what we use at home.

  • I'd bring both, but my guess is AIOs, AI2s or pocket diapers would be better for daycare if they're not that familiar with cloth. We use Best Bottom diapers and the daycare we used was fine with them.
  • There's a pretty good chance that your LO will be in one size by 7 weeks. Mine was pretty small at birth, slow to grow at first, and 6-7 weeks is when his OS diapers started fitting.

I would take in an AIO or pre-stuffed pocket. If she is still in prefolds at 7 weeks, they can learn that when the time comes. For the initial meeting, I'd keep it simple.

  • The one you'll use?  I wouldn't buy a special diaper just to convince them if it isn't what you'll be sending.

FYI, in my state, a daycare has to change the entire diaper and cover every time they change the baby.  So prefolds and covers wouldn't really be a good option, even if they were to agree to use them.

  • I took a BG Freetime to show my potential daycares since I plan on sending mostly AIO or pockets. Even though I do plan to use prefolds and covers at home when little one is a newborn, if he doesn't fit into his OS diapers when he goes to daycare I will send him with disposables until he fits. I told the daycares that he would be in disposables until he hits about 8lbs.

  • I wouldn't plan on using the prefolds and covers for daycare, so I wouldn't bring those. I'd say bring the Thirsties AIOs. Those will definitely fit her. I don't know if you can count on one-size fitting at 7 weeks. We got a lot of leaks with one-size until 12 weeks.

  • In Illinois, the daycare providers have to use whatever diapers the parent sends with their child - cloth or disposable.  When we used daycares (I'm now a SAHM doing an in-home daycare myself) I would let them know I was bringing CDs. I used BG AIO. Many were reluctant at first, but after a while they came up to me and would tell me how nice they were.

When we started out we had about 6 BG and I would wash them nightly. We used prefolds at home in the beginning because they were cheap. Slowly we built our AIO stash and as she got older we used AIOs all the time and OS pockets at night.
