C-sections

timing future pregnancies/c-sections?

i know my dr has said to wait 2 years before getting pregnant again (ideally) to give the body time to get back to normal, but we wanted our kids to be 1.5-2 years apart in age, so i doubt we'll wait that long.

in terms of having had a c-section and getting another does anyone know if theres higher risk if you wait say 8 mos to a year versus waiting longer to get pregnant again? Thanks!

Re: timing future pregnancies/c-sections?

  • Ours will be about 2 years apart exactly and I'm hoping to have a VBAC.  I haven't had any complications with this pregnancy, except this baby is currently breech and I read an AJOG article that you have a 2-fold risk increase of having a breech baby at term with a prior c-section.  But yeah, I think the risks are slightly higher if you space closer.

  • I didn't have to wait per my OB. I had 3 c-sections in 3 years and it wasn't an issue. Everything depends on how you heal though and your body........

  • It is statistically safer to wait 2 years between c-sections, yes.

With that being said, while there's higher risks with closely spaced c-sections, the overall risk is still incredibly low. Assuming you are healthy/had a textbook surgery there's no reason to not have kids 18-24m apart.

  • I got pg 6 monts after ds1 came and this time it was 11 1/2 months after ds2. I am not anymore high risk then anyone else. I had minimal scar tissue with ds2 and my obs have. No worries about me having ,y kids so close.

  • I'm pregnant again and my LO is 10 months - they will be about 18 months apart. My doctor never said anything about it so I'm hoping everyhing will be ok!

  • I got pg 4 months after my first c/s. My OB originally said to wait 6 months, but called and said we could start trying at 4m.

  • I just had my 6 week appt today.  I was told that the deliveries should ideally be 18 months apart... but that the earliest I could really start trying is 6 months.

  • I don't remember if my ob said one way or the other. I just wanted to say that my son is named Hunter too! It is such a cute name. :)
  • Honestly, you won't know until you deliver the second time how your body heals internally.  I didn't have issues until c/s #3, when I was told I had lost of adhesions/scar tissue (nothing between 1&2 BTW).  Right now your OB is just giving you standard advice.

That being said, having had some 15 mos apart, 17 mos apart and 24 mos apart, I would say wait a little longer if you can.  Lord knows, I know that accidents happen sometimes, that is how I got the two 15 mos apart, but it is easier on you physically and mentally to have them a little further apart.  If you were having them naturally, this discussion wouldn't matter, but since you are having c/s, and multiples at that, believe me when I say it is much easier to have a little breathing room in between, especially as you age.

My last two will be almost 3.5 years apart.  Part of that was due to the OOPS factor, and the other part was on recommendation from my OB.  My uterus is thin (who knew after 6c/s!), and he said the more time in between babies, the better it would be for both of us.

  • My OB gave me the all clear after my 1st pg at my 6 week appt. She knew we had TTTC and wanted to start again asap. She said as long as the c/s were a year apart (we crept in under that mark lol) we were fine. I haven't had my 6 week check yet this time, but during my surgery she said my uterus was extremely thin to the point of having problems stitching it back up. I had a large baby followed by another big baby and polyhydramnios, so I was huge. I'm assuming the close pg only made it worse, but I haven't gotten her opinion or any more details.

  • We are high risk and the doctor told us to wait until after baby was 1 year. That being said, normal and uncomplicated pregnancies/deliveries are pretty routine. Our doctor stated that the miscarriage rate was higher if pregnancy was achieved before the 1 year mark. But that may be just us.
