Cough medicine?

Hi everyone--

Just a quick question about coughs...do you know what is safe to take?  I have gotten a bad cold this weekend and have to get through tonight--will be calling my doctor in the morning.  Thanks!

Re: Cough medicine?

  • I'm not sure about that....I would call before taking anything.  Sorry you're feeling crummy.

  • I just got a list from my OB the other day of safe medications:

     For Cold/Sinusitis she listed:

    • Tylenol Cold Medication
    • Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine)
    • Benadryl, Actifed
    • Claritin
    • Afrin Nasal Spray (or generic equivalent)  Use no longer than 3 consecutive days.

    For Sore Throat:

    • Cepacol Lozenges
    • Chloraseptic Lozenges
    • Sucrets Lozenges
    • Gargle with salt water or Listerine
    • Halls, Vicks cough drops

    For Cough:

    • Robitussin Cough Syrup - Regular or DM formula
    • Robitussin Cough Drops
    • Vicks Formula 44

These are the ones that my OBGYN hands out to everyone.  She said they have been tested and are generally safe for pregnancy.   Of course, you might feel safer calling your dr on your own just to be sure :)

  • My list is similar to the PP with the addition of Mucinex being allowed.

Good luck! I've been battling a sinus infection/cold for the last week. Ugh.

  • My list from my midwife matches PP as well.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • Thank you for your lists--I stayed home from work today, put a call in to my OB nurse, and haven't heard back yet--I will pick up some of these, I can't wait anymore!
  • I was going to recommend Robitussin DM.  I had to use it around 4 weeks and it really helped.
