3 hour blood sugar results in - and im given options?

So my Drs office just called with my 3 hour results and I am really happy to report that I am not "technically" diagnosed with GD, however my results were:

fasting: 80

1 hr: 216!!!!

2 hr: 104

3 hr: 63

so my drs office said that the fasting and two hour are ideal - the 1 hr is shockingly high and the 3 hr is low... so she said that I did pass - but bc the 1 hr is so high, I have two options..

one is to keep doing what I am doing with slight modifications (she said that the one hr high indicates that balancing snacks and meals with protein is critical as it is clear i am sensitive to high amounts of sugar) and not to go more than 2.5 - 3 hours without a snack - as my blood sugar gets low - and get retested at 30 weeks (5 weeks from now)

 OR

go ahead and meet with a specialist

anyone have any advice? My tendency is to be proactive and go ahead with the specialist

anyone else ever heard of results so all-over-the-place?

  • Honestly, I would be proactive and go and meet the specialist. They are pretty sure they missed my GD during my first pregnancy and I ended up having a 10+ lb baby and ended up having to have a csection.

They caught it early this time around for me. I only failed my fasting by 1 point but they are being overly cautious, due to the size of DD. To me, it's better safe than sorry. The diet isn't that bad and it's a good thing to keep an eye on.

    Good luck!!

  • I passed everything but the fasting time point, and they are making me go back in a week and do the 3hr over again. Not ideal, but at this point, I would rather do that than get diagnosed, only because when you are labeled "high risk", you have a statistically higher chance of having a c-section, which I would rather not have.

All this is to say, I don't really have any advice, other than the ambiguous results are frustrating, but hang in there.

  • I'd be more likely to make adjustments to my diet, do a little research about GD diets and then re-test in 5 weeks. But that's just me. You need to decide what's most comfortable for you - no what we would all do.

  • Good for you for passing! Your numbers were way better than mine. My fasting was good, one hour about the same as yours, then I dropped to a 189 and stayed there for the two and three hour. When you say specialist, is that a dietician or high-risk doctor? Just wondering because I didn't have to be referred to a high risk doctor, but I found that meeting with the dietician was extremely helpful in devising a diet plan and carb count, so I would rather go that route if that was an option.
  • i'm glad you didn't get the full on GD diagnosis!

if i were you, i'd meet with the specialist.  it can't hurt, right?  you might be able to figure out a) whether whatever sugar metabolism issue these results indicate can post hazardous to you or the baby, b) whether the drs office advice is corroborated (a second opinion), and c) what they think generally.

    good luck!

  • thanks everyone! yes - I am happy that I didnt get the full on diagnosis too.. but I clearly still have some things to work on. I called my Drs office back after thinking about it some more - they said that what this test shows me is how critical it is to balance carbs with protein (my body obviously reacted to the 100 g of sugar and spiked) and they also said that its now clear that i must snack/eat at LEAST every three hours (just something small) but to keep my blood sugar from dipping.  They said if I can focus on those two things for the next week and a half (I leave for a 10 day business trip tomorrow) then I should be making the right changes and getting things where they need to be,  I told them I would still like to see a specialist - they clarified a dietician (not a high risk dr) to better understand how to control things- and then I will retest at 30 weeks just to be sure....

i feel much better knowing that i can proactively do things to reverse this issue - focusing more than anything on having protein with my carbs and regular scheduled eating..

    thank you for your support!!!
