Has anyone else experienced this? It has become crippling in the past week and a half, and I've been trying to find a remedy that's not just "bed rest" - very hard to do when I stand all day at work! I have my A/S and appointment with the doctor tomorrow so I will definitely be asking then. It's just frustrating because the people I've asked IRL have been so negative and dismissive i.e. "It's too early for that" or "You're not even showing enough to be in pain". Well, when the shooting nerve pain make me feel like my leg is going to give out, I'd say it's apparently not too early
Re: Sciatica Pain?
I've had sciatic pain for at least a month now...so I say, no it's not too early and people are stupid for dismissing a pregnant woman's pain. Everyone is different, I never even had sciatic pain the first time.
Unfortunately I'm not going to be much help though, I don't have a good answer on how to make it go away. I get it at work sitting down and walking around or changing positions usually helps. But I had it walking around yesterday, and just tried to keep walking it off. Haven't found a good remedy.
Good luck & sorry the people IRL aren't helpful!

I have been experiencing sciatic pain as well. Dr. said it was the baby pushing on the nerve endings and hopefully would ease up as the baby moves higher. So no, it is not too early for you to feel it and people IRL should really stop acting like doctors.
I have found that most of the time, women who had children have very "rose-colored" memories of their pregnancy so I usually take their criticisms of my feelings and/or aches and pains with a grain of salt.
It's funny because this is the first time I've asked a question of people close to me IRL about pregnancy (aside from my mother)... I've learned my lesson
with that group I'll just look like a complainer or they'll make me sit down and drink a glass of water LOL!
Mine has been sporadically unbearable for the last couple months to the point where I can't put any weight on my right leg. It is TERRIBLE! Sleeping with a maternity pillow or a pillow between my knees helps a little as does a heating pad. I asked my doctor and her only other suggestion was physical therapy which I haven't looked into yet.
Shame on those other ladies for telling you what you can or can't be feeling and when, by the way!

count me in. I had what the docs finally called 'pseudo-sciatica' a few years ago - sciatic pain not from a disc or back problem but because in a certain small percentage of people, the nerve runs through a muscle in your ass (rather than beside) so if the muscle knots up, it pinches the nerve. It got so bad I couldn't sit at all (wrote undergrad exams laying on the floor). For me, massage helped, as did chiro. my doc was pretty unhelpful when I said thought it was coming back and basically just told me to stretch and that it would probably just get worse (have I mentioned I don't really like my doc?)
If you google sciatica stretches you should find something helpful, though the ones that help me the most are getting harder with a growing belly. look into physio or chiro - it can take a while to work so start soon!
I got it around 10 weeks so I feel your pain.
I sit all day at work, and so I don't think it matters how much you stand.
Things that helped me:
Reducing how much I climb steps. Not lifting weight. Not carrying around my purse if I go shopping. AND....The number 1 thing was going to the chiropractor.
more stuff i remembered:
- ditto avoiding carrying heavy stuff. avoid heavy purses (e.g. if you need to carry a lot, use a back pack with lots of support, or a rolling bag)
- walk a lot!
- i get my partner to massage my ass. basically, if you have any knots that are sore to touch, that's where you need to work on as they may be making the sciatic pain worse by pressing more on the nerve. it's painful as all hell to do, but it really helps to knead out knots. it gets better the more you do it (over days, not over one session). my chiro would have me lay with a tennis ball under the knot - the pressure would break it up a bit. haven't gone since pregnant, so you'd want to make sure this is all safe for the current situation.
- doc said that having tightness in the legs is also bad for sciatic pain. especially calf tightness (which i *always* have). stretches aimed at reducing that can be helpful.
