Trouble TTC

PCOS and losing faith...

I was diagnosed in December with PCOS, and yet when I got the diagnosis there was a bit of relief. We had been TTC for over a year at that point with no solid answer on why it wasn't happening. My Dr was confident that with her help I would get pregnant no problem. 4 months of clomid and metformin have gone by with no luck and then on top of it she just had her NURSE call to tell me she can't see me anymore I need to go to a specialist. I am feeling dissed, she's been my Dr through all of this and now even she is giving up? On top of that my insurance has already sent me the first bill saying none of this will be covered anymore, which tells me that they certainly won't be covering any specialist bills!

Any suggestions from anyone with PCOS on something I can do? I've done accupuncture, I've done all the meds she's prescribed, what else can I possibly do?

And of course while all this goes on, I have 2 people very close to me who got pregnant while on the pill!

I'm slowly losing all my faith... more so wrote this to vent :/

    Don't lose faith and don't give up yet.  Your dr isn't referring you to a specialist because she's dissing you; she's looking out for your best interest.  After more than a year of TTC with no success, PCOS and failed rounds of clomid, the best thing you CAN do is go to an RE because at that point, there are tests that need to be ran to better diagnose you.  I mean, I know you've done 4 rounds of clomid, but has your partner/ DH had a s/a yet?  Do you know if there is any MI involved at all?

  • I guess the way she did it was upsetting, it wasn't even her normal nurse that called me, but yes, it's probably a good thing that she isn't just stringing me along...

    He has the s/a appt scheduled for next week. I have recently found out that the PCOS and other issues are coming from my Dad's side, my husband's family has absolutely no history of problems so I'm hoping that eveything will come out normal.

     Not familiar with all the lingo, MI?

  • I have PCOS and just got a BFP after 20 months of trying.  I did four rounds of Clomid before switching to Femara.  Three rounds of Femara+trigger+timed intercourse and nothing.  It was the Femara+trigger+IUI that did it.

    Don't lose your faith.  Just lose your timeline.

  • How long did you do acupuncture? We you ovulating on your own? I had some good success with acupuncture, but I was AO and it took 3 months of going once a week at least to get my cycles to 40 days or less, but evetually I did O on my own. Of course not everyone responds to acupuncture and even though I did not get KU, I do credit acupuncture for helping me become more aware of my body, which in turn made me question the pelvic pain I was having and I was able to catch what was almost ovarian cancer before it got to that point (pre-cancerous cells found on a cyst the size of a tomato!).  Don't loose faith just yet, definitely see and RE to get a better idea of the next steps that are right for your situation.  Good luck!

    Me = 32, PCOS, AO :: DH = 34, SA= all good!
    TTC since April 2009
    9/11 - Started Acupuncture, began O on my own in November!
    1/12 - Consult w/ RE
    1/24/12 - Lap & Cystectomy to remove a tumor w/ precancerous cells from left ovary, also removed part of left ovary, no signs of endo noticed at that time
    2/12 - forced break to recover from surgery
    3/12- given the OK to start treatment w/ RE
    3/12 - HSG = right side good, unable to get dye in left tube so cannot verify if it is clear
    5/12 - Clomid + trigger + IUI = BFN 6/12 - Medicated cycle cancelled due to cysts, natural cycle instead

    That's a little strange your dr did 4 rounds of clomid without having a s/a... did they monitor you while on the clomid at all?

     And I'm sorry about that, MI is male infertility.  It took me awhile to catch on to the lingo as well!  Smile

  • I have PCOS too. I think you're better off seeing an RE, even without the insurance coverage. My insurance doesn't cover it either but I feel so much more confident about my RE's plan than my OB's. Without going to the RE, we never would have figured out my DH has low morph because my OB didn't bother having him do an SA.

    I fail at reading, you mentioned Clomid.  Yes, your doctor is 100% right to send you to a specialist. Did she monitor you with ultrasounds and bloodwork while on Clomid?

  • I think the doc was completely right in referring you on. The most you can take clomid for is for 6 cycles, otherwise it is rendered ineffective and detrimental if taken longer than that. In my opinion, the doctor waited way too long to refer you to the RE, given the dx of PCOS, it is not typically expected for that treatment by itself to succeed for ppl like us. My OB referred me after 1 cycle of clomid.

    Clomid can definitely bring success to people with PCOS, when monitored and used properly.

  • I know how you are feeling. DH and I have been TTC a year this June. We had a BFP in November, and then lost our little one 3 weeks later (what a wonderful Thanksgiving THAT was...didn't even have time to tell our familes.) After seeing my OB/GYN she started me on Clomid and Provera. After one round, nothing happened. At that time my insurance changed and I lost my OB. Because I was starting to have regular periods again, I wasn't worried about it and had hope to try again the old fashioned way. Well, soon my periods stoped, and I was at the same wall again. I found a new doctor, who I loved who decided to run blood tests and an U/S on me to see what she could find. Sure enough, PCOS. Last Tuesday I started metformin to get the ball rolling, and we will then look to clomid and provera if needed. We are hoping to get a BFP by December...but you never know. I think you found the right place with people to talk to. All you need right now is some major support.

  • I have very irregular periods and so my OBGYN told me I needed to see an RE from the get go. I did two rounds of cholomid and an IUI with the first RE. The IUI resulted in a BFP (big fat positive), shortly followed by a mc. We were told we had to take a break after the mc and I took that as an opportunity to change doctors sense I wasn't a fan of my first RE. My new RE is AMAZING. Having the right doctor can restore your faith. Keep your head up. This process sucks, but having a doctor who specializes in the area and knows what they are doing can only make your odds better.

     On a more specific note. My first doctor diagnosed me with PCOS, but failed to diagnose me with Insulin Resistance. My new RE diagnosed me with insulin resistance and started me on Metformin. Metformin has help to make my periods more regular...I'm still not perfect, but I'm a lot better off than I was before. He also told me that treating the insulin resistance should help to reduce my chances of future mc. PCOS is often coupled with insulin resistance, so you might ask your new doctor about being tested for it.

    TTC Since Dec. 2010 August 2011 Diagnosed with PCOS (I rarely ovulate on my own); SA got an A++ :)
    Nov 2011 50mg of Chlomid, but IUI was cancelled b/c the follicles were too small
    Dec 2011 100mg of Chlomid and IUI on Dec 17; BFP Dec 29, mc on Jan 5;
    Feb 2012 Changed Doctors and diagnosed with Insulin Resistance, put on 1500mg of Metformin;
    April 2012 Natural Cycle;
    May 2012 7.5mg of Famera w/TI (due to office being closed on holiday) = BFN;
    June 2012 7.5mg of Famera w/IUI #2 = BFN;
    July 2012 7.5mg of Famera w/IUI #3 = BFN;
    August 2012 7.5mg Famera + 75 Follistim w/TI (due to travel) = BFN;
    Sept 7.5mg Femera + 75 Follistim
  • What is your exercise routine? I was diagnosed with PCOS in February I started exercising again towards the end of last cycle - I had gotten really lazy over the last few years and decided to join a gym again. Now this cycle, I'm 10dpo which I've never gotten to without AF. I don't think I'm KU, which is totally okay. I think exercising really helped get my body going again. I've also been taking Metformin for 3 cycles now, so it could have been a combo of both. But I'd highly try exercising and see if that helps.....even if it is just walking around the neighborhood. From what I've read, it can really help PCOS.

    Even if I don't get a BFP this cycle, I'm SUPER relieved that my new doctor (the one who diagnosed me) was able to figure it out and get me going on treatment that is actually working. Treating the problem vs. fixing the symptoms makes a difference. My old doctor wanted to just give me Clomid without seeing what was causing my issues, and that was making me depressed, so I saw someone new. I feel much more confident now that if I do get a BFP, I won't be nervous about issues due to a shorter luteal phase.

    Good luck!
