Cloth Diapering

Non family babysitter for the first time - advice please!

We're leaving A with co-workers daughter (she's a college student) for an evening. A wears fitteds and covers to sleep usually. It will be too early to get her into her sleep diaper when she gets here but she'll be putting her to bed. I'm worried about making this girl get her into a fitted and cover. Am I just being silly? Any tips or suggestions? I don't have a problem with buying some sposies for her but we've never used them ON so i have no clue how they will hold up!

  • i use sposies at night anyway, but when my sitter is here I have AIOs with aplix or sposies. I would buy a size up sposie for her so there is absorbancy. I wouldnt make her deal with it all...but I dont like covers and fitteds. ;)

Do you use sposies made for ON or just regular ones?

  • I would just show her how to do it when she gets there.  I don't think it's that complicated for a college student!  Plus, if you're going to use her again, it's something she'll need to know anyway :)

This- exactly. I haven't used fitteds and covers (yet), but they really cannot be that complicated. It's not like you are asking her to fold and pin a flat, and then cover it!

This is very true. I just know what a tough time I have getting her into her diapers sometimes. She likes to do the alligator death roll while being changed. But I guess fitteds and covers aren't really a big deal. And some of our wool soakers are just slip on.

  • I use pampers mainly at night. DD is 25 lbs and wears a 5.

We had too many leaks with CDs at night and I like her to feel dry at night. I have used pockets with bamboo and hemp inserts and they are fine.

I have had sitters that find CDs interesting and are willing, but for me since I have sposies in the house I just leave her 1 or 2 and its easier.

  • I babysat a lot in college - a fitted and cover would not have phased me one bit. I'd say give her a little tutorial and let her go for it.

  • I figure if you can trust her to take care of your child, she is probably competent enough to change her into a fitted and a cover! Plus, maybe if/when she has her own children you'll have helped her know how awesome cloth is.

  • Our HS babysitters can manage our cloth diapers. Yes, we did have to show the 2 of them the first time they babysat. But now they are pros at both PFs and covers and fitteds and covers (they even know to use a fleece liner overnight).

So based on my experience, I'd just ask the sitter to come a few minutes early so you can demonstrate the diapers.

  • Would you rather show her how to use them, or risk your daughter having a reaction while you're not home. If you haven't used sposies, you don't know if she's allergic.

  • Thanks everyone - I will just show her how to do it. I'm sure she'll be fine!

  • I'd just show her and see how she reacts. She seems confused reach for something easier.

That said, my two main babysitters are teenage girls and they had the diaper thing figured out in about 5 seconds once I showed them!

  • Yeah, I'd just show her what to do. When we have somebody watch DD we always leave stuffed pocket diapers for them to use, but I have had to be kinda specific about how tight to make them - my sweet teenaged niece never wants to make them tight enough.

Funny, semi-related story - one time my mom ended up watching DD a little longer than we had planned, and we didn't have any diapers stuffed. We came home to find her wearing a microfiber insert against her skin inside an inside-out fitted diaper, all covered up with an empty BG shell! LOL

  • I just wanted to say I don't think you're being silly at all! I just had my sister (college age) watch my LO last night. It was the first time she would be putting him to bed and I was fretting over the same thing! He ended up in his ON diaper before we left b/c I knew he would be waking at least once after we got home and I could change him then. He is a bit of a wild animal during changes, too. :)

    Enjoy your night out!

This.  I work as a nanny and while the kids are mostly out of diapers now, cloth wouldn't phase me at all.
