English is my first and only language, unfortunately. I would love to speak another language. I understand some Spanish after taking it in school for years, but I don't think I could have a full-on conversation in Spanish.
DH speaks Irish as a second language and I'm trying to encourage him to speak it to Saoirse as much as possible so it will be natural to her. It's probably the least useful langauge to know since no one really speaks it excusively, except in very remote parts of Ireland, though they do have radio and TV stations exclusively in Irish. You're really missing out if you've never seen Dora the Explorer in Irish, it's hilarious. If we end up living in Ireland someday (as we hope to) then she will have to learn it in school so she will have a head start. I'm trying to learn it as much as possible to help her learn too. I think it's really important to keep cultural heritage alive no matter where you come from.
yea I only speak English as well, and I seriously laughed at you Dora in Irish lol
Yeah, my BIL was in Ireland with us one day (he's American too - SIL's husband) and his kids were watching Diego for about 20 minutes before he turned to me and said "This is not in English is it?" I said "Did you not notice it was called 'Ri, Diego, Ri' on the giude?" He had put on the Irish language channel without knowing! I can't believe it took him that long to notice. The kids could not have cared less. Just goes to show you they are not really learning Spanish from that show if they didn't even notice the rest of it wasn't in English. They couldn't understand a word.
English is my first language. I used to speak Spanish pretty much fluently, but haven't used it in close to 10 years so I've lost most of it. I also used to use ASL pretty well, but again, haven't used it in so long. I'm sure if I immersed myself in them again I'd pick up quickly, but for now the skills are hiding.
Only English here. I was a Spanish major for 2 years in college, but I couldn't actually speak more than a few sentences. DH knows some French because he grew up in Canada where every student has to study French also, but again, he only knows a minimal amount.
I used to be pretty fluent in French, since we start in K here and I went all the way through high school. However, I haven't used it since then, so it's been about 14 years (yikes) and I don't have the ability to speak it well at all anymore.
English, one and only, I tried so many other... Spanish, French, German, and Arabic... You name it and I really couldn't grasp it. I am lucky I suppose I speak English.

English is really my only fluent language, but I do undertsand some high school and college Spanish and some Albanian.
DH's first language is Albanian and he speaks it to DD all the time. I want her to pick it up so she can converse with his family.
