A post below got me thinking. We still give LO a take and toss sippy cup all the time - at home, out for dinner, etc. Mostly because he'll spill it otherwise- not because he can't drink out of a regular cup.
Anyone else? Is there a typical age when this should be stopped? I saw people posting about daycares not allowing them but LO stays with my MIL so I'm out of the loop!
Thanks!
Re: Does your LO still drink from a sippy cup?
DD will be 4 in June & she still uses the straw cups at bed time or if she wants a drink outside the kitchen. But no she doesn't use a "sippy" cup.
I think that as soon as you can try to get them off the sippy cup. Something to do with their teeth & bite can be affected by it. You could try a toddler sport bottle withhe soft nipple type top. DD used those for a long time after getting off the bottle.
Here is what I'm talking about.

We have been using open cups for months but most of the time she wants a straw in the cup, although she does sometimes drink without it. When I go to other people?s houses I take a closed cup.

DS, 4 years old, used a sippy after he turned 2, but once his speech delay was diagnosed they strongly recommended we drop the sippy for open mouth cups, or at least a straw cup. I think we switched to straw cups first, and then transitioned to open mouth cups.
WIth DD we switched to open mouth cups really early. She turned 2 in January and I dont actually remember the last time she used a sippy/straw cup. She's perfectly fine with an open cup. Of course there are exceptions sometimes, but both LOs use open cups almost exclusively, no matter where we are.
With regards to spills, we just don't let them walk around with their cup. If they want a drink they can sit at the table, stand near the sink, or at the coffee table. And I don't give them much at a time. Sometimes they spill, but they're kids, so it's expected on occasion (we also make them get a towel and clean up the spill on their own).
Ds uses all sorts of cups, but if we want to avoid a mess in the car or when he's walking around, we will usually use a regular straw in a cup.
You should see the little cups they use in daycare. It is the cutest thing ever! At snack time or mealtime, they use these little plastic cups that look like real glasses and all the little kids sit around the table and use them. They look like little adults.

my DS is 3 and he still drinks from a sippy. He can drink from a regular cup, but he prefers his sippy cups and that's fine by me. That means if he drops the cup, I won't be cleaning up milk or juice or water.
