Why am I attached to my junk?

We are moving in a month, so we are getting rid of a ton of stuff. It is so hard for me to get rid of the littlest things. Like cloth napkins a friend gave me, or a mini cooler that I've had since fourth grade! We are sending a bunch of furniture back with friends to store at mil's house. We will probably have to share a house with another family and won't have room for all of our stuff :( We have a meeting on Wednesday and we will hopefully find out where we are going to live. (it is like campus housing where we get assigned a place) Unfortunately we can't afford to live off campus right now.

Re: Why am I attached to my junk?

  • I'm a pack rat. It doesn't help that we now have a whole garage for me to fill up! I feel your pain. Moving is the worst though, there's always so much junk I don't remember collecting!!

Could you have a yard sale? I tell myself if I sell a bunch of stuff at a yard sale I can use the money to buy one new thing that I want. Then I just try to be as honest as I can with myself about things I really NEED to keep and things that I don't need and are just taking up space.

  • What really helped me get rid of stuff is packing it away in boxes for 9 months to a year and then going through it again (when I was unpacking).  I didn't understand why I put some stuff away when I should have just thrown it away or donated it in the first place.  I think putting it away for that long helps remind me why I don't need it and helps remove the personal connection to it.

  • Before we had DD, our second bedroom was a dumping ground for "stuff".  DD forced us to go through it and really keep only what was important.  My DH and I are both pack rats and we live in a condo, there just isnt room. I can't imagine if we lived in a house how much stuff we would accumulate.

This is such a great idea. I'm going to try it :)

I had boxes stacked to the ceiling in our dining room in our 900 sqft apartment. The cats really thought it was great; DH, on the other hand, did not. :D
