Infertility

Beta #1 tomorrow...go to work or not??

So I have my first beta tomorrow...from our first full IVF cycle.  I orginally planned on going to work after my appointment, and just take "the call" at work.  DH is telling me I should just stay home and relax, while waiting for the call.  I would really like to stay home...but can't decide what to do.  I know I can miss and maybe do some work from home, but I'm just wondering if it would help keep my mind busy at work.

What did everyone else do?  Did you go back to work or not?  What do you think?

Re: Beta #1 tomorrow...go to work or not??

  • no matter how much i prepare for the bfn call, i still get hit in a horrible emotional way with every call.

bc of that i try to stay busy with work, but put myself in a location where i can have privacy when i get the call.

almost every time, i end up writing off nearly the whole day as a mental health day. the emotional strain is taxing no matter which way the news goes...

best of luck with your beta!

  • As someone who has spent three days now waiting on the Beta call, go to work! You'll need the distraction. Unless of course, your hubby is ok with you spending the day shopping instead. In which case, do that instead.

My calls usually don't come in until around 2:00 anyway.

You can always let your Dr know it is ok to leave a message and just turn your phone off and not take the call until you get home.

  • I agree. It doesnt matter where you are, the BFN call is definitely hard. Trying to focus while thinking about the beta is challenging.

My last cycle, I ended up testing with a FRER after my beta but before the call..that way I knew the result (or so I thought- I was testing negative but actually was somewhat pregnant) and had time to process it so I wouldnt lose it as much when the doctor called. I think I will do the same this Friday...You cant change the outcome of the beta but at least it would give you a warning and time to process before the call.

     Good luck!

  • I was at work for our first beta call.  This time, I'm planning on working from home. It can be a rough day.  I hope it isn't for you, but it's better to be prepared for that possibility. Good luck!

  • um the last BFN call I got (the 3rd) I thought, huh, lemme be out shopping. So I was out at an outlet mall. Bad plan. I'd rather have been at work, where I can shut doors, or at home where I can all out wallow.

On the up shot, after I got the last call I found a Kate Spade purse on 70% off. Retail therapy.

however, I hope for you, good news!

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies!  I am so nervous...I don't know what to do.  I don't really have a private office, so I think I would be better off to stay home...prepare for the worst.  Kind of wishing I would have POAS this morning.  Good luck to all of you!  Thanks again!

  • I would POAS in the morning.  Then when you go for your beta ask them to only call you if it's positive.  I have done that for the past few cycles and it has been great.  That way I know going in what I expect it to be and I don't have to worry about getting a BFN call at work.  I go to work with the assurance that nobody is going to call me to give me bad news.

Good Luck!!!  I hope you get fantastic news!

  • I must say, I went to work on the day of my beta, and I really wish I hadn't.  I hadn't really been emotional through the entire process until beta day.  I woke up that morning with a bad feeling and some spotting.  I didn't POAS because I am extremely superstitious.  Besides the terrible part where I started crying while getting blood drawn, I was just a mess all day.  After getting the phone call with my beta of 6, I had to keep going outside and walking around the block.  I couldn't exactly sob in my cube.  I was completely unproductive and visibly distracted.  To the point that a few people said something to me.  Luckily it was a Friday and my boss was out of the office, so it was a quiet day in the office.  If I had to actually interact with people, I probably would have needed to go home sick or something.  By far the worst day of the process.

Even if the news would have been great, I think work would be the last place I would want to be.  So, if there is any way I can work from home next time, I will.

  • I am like iguana33 and am supersitious and didn't POAS ever. I got 5 BFN calls and 1 BFP call. No matter what the call is I wanted to be home. I could either wallow/sleep do whatever to have my time to "mourn" the BFN before getting back on the IF rollercoaster OR when I got the BFP, the last thing on my mind was WORK! We were crying and hugging and spent the whole day together discussing how to share the news. So IMO stay home! And trust your gut, if you think you should stay home, stay! Either way I'm hoping for a BIG FAT BFP for you!!!

  • what time does your call come? can  you work for a a few hours then go home? my clinic doesnt call until late in the day, thats why i ask.

have you POAS? i would be inclined to go to work because if i get bad news then im distracted and not just all alone at home ya know? good luck with your beta, hoping for some good numbers!

  • I'm planning on taking the day off for go around#2.  Went to work for #1 and honestly I was completly convinced it would work, I guess I never really thought about the "what if".  Getting that call was the most devasting thing, I was completly useless at work that day and cried in the car for about half hour.  My HR manager came and felt she had to check up on me, it was so embarrasing.  I will be taking the day off and trying to relax with DH instead this time.  Or possiblly will work a few hours then leave before the call comes in.
TTC since 2008, our little miracle arrived July 2013!
