C-sections

Bruising (hematoma?) on the sides of the belly

Hi everyone! I'm new here :) I had a c-section on Monday with my LO - he was 9lbs 11oz and his head was too big to push out (after 3 hours of trying!) My question is - I didn't get to look at my incision much at the hospital but it was looked over all the time. I did have a hard time sleeping on my side even w/ pain relief - either side, but assumed it was just from the surgery. Later when I got home I saw these huge bruises to the sides of my belly. My mom says they are hematomas and should go away eventually. They look puffy (skin on them) though and pretty gross. Can anyone tell me what they are and what to expect?

I can post pictures if need be!

  • I can't help with the bruising, but I will say that it was probably close to 2 weeks before I felt comfortable sleeping on my sides. It felt very strange to sleep on my back after so many months of that being taboo, but I felt the most comfortable on my back with my head/upper back elevated by pillows. HTH!

  • This all sounds normal.  They may change color, or you may see the area get that greenish or yellowish bruise stuff going on.  I wouldn't worry.

Will you have a 2 week incision check?

    Congrats on the new baby!

  • Thanks! Yeah - they will check it in a few weeks, at which point I can ask - what the heck is this? ;)

  • I got a terrible hematoma that took two months to go away under my incision all the way into my vaginal area (sorry tmi..just wanted to tell you what happened).

I was told if it wasn't an active bleed (which would be red) then it will go away.  I was so swollen in my entire area and black to purple.  It was pretty brutal.  Mine was bad and went away, yours sounds like it isn't that bad so I would just give it a little time :)

  • You can alternate heat and ice to help the fluid and blood reabsorb.

I didn't have a hematoma, but I had horrid bruising and swelling in my belly that extended downward into my crotch. It was lovely Indifferent I had to lay with my hips elevated and alternate heat and ice on the area.
