Cloth Diapering

I've RLR'd, Rocked, deFunked, Cal....

...Now WHAT?!!

I have been on here quite a bit to get advice for our problems, so first off thank you all for your wisdom!

I have been in touch with the laundry guru at Rockin' Green due to our persistant rash and ammonia stink issue (after only 1 month of CD)...

I've RLR'd, added Calgon, Rocked a Soak and Funk Rock soaks (twice), changed from Hard Rock to Classic with no scent and still stink of ammonia and his rash came back 3 days in to cloth again.

I don't want to quit at all...should I try Tiny Bubbles Detergent? Or another detergent?  We have mild to moderately  hard well water...

Any other suggestions ladies? I don't want to quit!

Current routine: (every other day wash)

Express wash (no detergent, warm - changed from cold recently)

Hot heavy duty cycle with RnG, Calgon, and now Funk Rock with a Skincare rinse

Extra  warm rinse cycle and spin

  • I'd try a different brand of detergent all together.  We used RnG for awhile but in the end I was having problems getting rid of the the stink (we had super hard water at the time and 3TBS of Hard Rock wasn't cutting it anymore).

We've been using dropps without issues since then.

  • yeah you should switch brands :( i didn't think RnG worked well at all either!

  • RnG did not work for me. I would switch detergents. If you're ready to scream, try Tide. I found anything except RnG has worked fine for me, though. I've used Clean B, the EFF homemade recipe, and soap nuts.

RnG is a real love it or hate it product. If it's not working, give it up.

  • I'd try another rinse cycle at the end. Might still be soap build up. As soon as I did that, our rashes disappeared.
  • I haven't had this kind of issue, but my routine is cold rinse, hot wash (all free and clear), cold rinse, cold rinse.  I personally think the cold rinses work better than warm rinses to get all the soap out, but that's just my experience.

  • Do you have hard water?  If so, I would recommend switching to Tide powder and getting rid of the other additives.  If you don't have hard water, I would recommend trying something like Country Save or Charlie's and using 1/4 c baking soda with your prewash and 1/2 c vinegar with your final rinse.  Either of these will almost definitely solve your problem :)

  • I'm kind of in the same boat here.  What I've been finding is working for us is:

    1. cold/cold w/o soap
    2. hot/cold w/ Charlie's (1 T)
    3. warm/warm rinse w/o  & no spin cycle (keeps a lot of water in the drum to "trick" my washer into thinking there is more laundry in the drum than there actually is.)  Repeat step 3 until NO bubbles...this take a long time for us for some reason)
    4. warm/warm rinse w/ 1/4 c Calgon

So far this is working...but who knows how long it'll work.  ::shrug::

FWIW we have pretty hard water.  I have an HE top loader (hate it).

We've also tried RnG & it seemed to make our problems worse, so I went back to my trusty Charlie's.  We also did an RLR strip this week.

  • Ditto.

I did it all... and as much as I love RnG for our clothes, it's not working for my diapers.  I had HORRENDOUS ammonia stink with it - it's just not strong enough in some water.

I'm switching to Tiny Bubbles.  I had gotten samples from my diaper lady, and the stink is gone on the 3rd wash.

  • Okay so I ordered some Tiny Bubbles which should arrive Tuesday. Thinking I will do a bunch of hot washes Monday to get detergent out. Should I RLR soak as well? I have a packet here...

  • If you've got the RLR anyway, I'd go for it. That should get everything out and let you start fresh. Hopefully the Tiny Bubbles works better for you! I've had better luck with everything since Rockin Green.
  • hated RnG, love Tiny bubbles. I also have no stink after getting rid of microfiber. but with TB and MF I had barely any issues.
