Variants of Alexandra?

DH is Russian, while my family is Irish and German. DH prefers Russian names, so we have ultimately been looking at those. We want to name a daughter after my mother, but use a different variation of it (Saundra/Sandy, from Alexandra).

Originally, we had agreed on Sasha (MN Cadence), but I would like her to have a more formal name. We cannot use Alexandra as is, because my nephew is Kaeden Alexander (too close to Alexandra Cadence). Do anyone have any suggestions on other variations? They do not have to be Russian, I just need some fresh ideas.

ETA: Any opinions on Sasha Cadence as is?

Re: Variants of Alexandra?

  • I like the name Sasha Cadence, but I wouldn't link it as being a variance of Alexandra.  I love the name Alexa as a variant of Alexandra.

  • I'd go ahead and use Alexandra and not let your nephew's middle name deter you, and then call her Sasha.  If you really think the names will be too similar then what about a different middle name?

I really like Alessandra and Alejandra but obviously not very Russian and the second one doesn't even have the "Sandra" sound in it.  I think there are more nicknames available to Alexandra than there are actual variations (thatcI'd recommend at least).

     Ditto.

    Another vote for this.

Though I do like Sasha on its own, if you want something more formal, Alexandra is the way to go. (Have you considered spelling it Aleksandra, the Russian way?).

No varient of Alexandra is going to make the name THAT much different from Caden Alexander: Alessandra Cadence, Alexa Cadence, Alexis Cadence, Alejandra Cadence----they're all about the same level of similar. So you might as well use the name you want to use. Or, as PP suggested, change the MN.

  • I love it
  • I'd name her Aleksandra because the name is gorgeous and gets tons of compliments in the U.S. (it's my name). Sasha screams boy to me.
  • I really like Alex for a girl.

Thank you all for the suggestions :) The middle name is set in stone, as it has a lot of meaning for us. The only variation I've come up with that is really different enough is the Gaelic variant of Alastriona, but DH isn't too fond of it. It looks like Aleksandra or just Sasha may be my best bet.

    Thanks again for the input.

I agree.  In my friends family many of the children have names in honor of their grandmother (Alexis).  In one family there is a Jaylin Alexis and an Alexander Miguel.  Another sister has an Alexa.  And another sister has a Brandon Alexander.  I don't think it's a big deal.
