Formula feeders...a question

Do you give your baby vitamins?

Currently, DD gets about 75% formula and 25% BM (pg made my supply tank). When she was EBF (or at least mostly BF), the pedi had me giving her a serving of polyvisol each day.

I know formula is fortified with vitamins, so I'm hesitant to give her additional vitamins on top of that. I'll ask my pedi at her one year appointment in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, I wanted to find out what you all do.

Re: Formula feeders...a question

  • Our pedi said at our 9 month appointment that since Cam is getting about 75% formula now, he no longer needs the vitamins.  We were crappy at giving them anyways.

  • My pedi gave us a prescription for vitamins, but like you, I have been hesitant. Especially after reading the labels, I am even more hesitant. But, now that DD is getting less formula, I think we will probably start using the vitamins more, just to be safe.
  • Nope, I did while we were primarily BFing and just supplementing with formula but once she transitioned to FFing only I stopped per our Pedi.  She said the formula already has all the basic vitamins needed so there is no need to give separate vitamins too.

  • No, we don't. We stopped her poly-vi-sol a couple months ago.

  • We do not, pedi never even mentioned it to us. But, even when I was BFing, she was still getting formula because I did not make enough milk for her the EBF.

  • No.  But, we came clean with the doctor that we'd been terrible about them.  She did a quick finger prick to see if he was low with his iron and he wasn't.  So, we got the green light to take him off of them officially.

You're not going to overdose her on vitamins because she'll just pee out what she doesn't use.  How many actual ounces of formula is she having a day.  Pedi said that once he was having at least 15oz of formula a day that we didn't need to worry.

  • No vitamins. Pedi told me when she is getting 50% formula a day, I could stop.

  • We have been giving her vitamin D since she was born, last week I went to get more and they didn't have any so I just got a multi vitamin drop. I don't know if she really needs it though

  • Yep.  DS gets Ferrous Sulfate (1 ml) once a day in juice.  Pedi recommended it in a juice/water mixture because it needs Vitamin C to digest well.  He is low in iron though even with being on formula full time now.

She was cleared from anemia at her 9m check up, so the pedi had me switch from polyvisol with iron to just regular polyvisol. But, I was still 90% bfing then.

Id say we're right around the 15oz mark for formula.
