Cloth Diapering

Should I really have to strip again, ALREADY?!

So I've been CDing for 2mos now. About 3wks in I stripped with blue dawn because the pee smell was overwhelming. Now that smell is back again already! I've been using 2 scoops of my bumgenius detergent for my large load and I do 2 rinses. I'm leaning towards the thought of needing to switch detergents but I haven't really found one that's cheap per load.

Re: Should I really have to strip again, ALREADY?!

  • I'd switch detergents.

I use soap nuts, which are pretty cheap per load. Other people have good luck with Ultra Tide Original. Ammonia often means not enough water - can you do a "rinse and spin" with no spin to start, or add a few pitchers of water thru the detergent drawer (assuming a front loader here)? How big are the loads you're washing?

  • Loading the player...
  • I've heard that people have issues with that detergent.

For what it's worth, if you're having ammonia problems you're using too much detergent.

  • I have a top loader and I'm using the recommended amount of detergent. It's a large load and I set the washer on extra large and it fills to the tip-top. Also, I usually wash every 3 days. If not 3, then 2 days. It depends on my work schedule for the week. I work 7a-7:30p so the last thing I want to do when I get home is wash anything. And I don't trust DH to wash them yet...

  • Definetely switch detergents! I've had my diapers for 3 years [and 2 kids] and have only needed to strip them once in that entire time. We use Charlies Soap [powder form]. We buy them on amazon the small tubs 3 at a time to get free shipping. We use the detergent on all of our clothes and the cloth diapers and the 3 tubs last us about 6-7mths [cost is around $35].

  • Thanks! I will switch detergents as soon as I order some. I will use up the rest of my BG detergent on clothes. I will check out soap nuts and Charlie's!

  • I have to ask - is it ammonia, or it is a pee smell?

My next door neighbor uses BG detergent.  When her daughter peed in them, the smell was STRONG.  But, it wasn't ammonia.  After diving nose first in to all her diapers (LOL!) I found her clean ones smelled like detergent - she has to run a soap free hot wash after her regular wash routine.  There wasn't enough build up for ammonia, and if this is your case, you won't have to do a full strip, just wash and rinse them a few times with nothing but water.
