3rd Trimester

BH Length

Hi all.

I am 40+ weeks pregnant.  I have been experiencing BH contractions for a couple of weeks now.  I have been timing them for the past couple of days and they have been about 1-2 minutes long.  I knew they were BH because they weren't increasing with intensity, stayed the same length of time (sometimes 10 minutes apart, sometimes 5 minutes apart) and would go away for a few hours and return.

I just went online and read that BH contractions are actually supposed to be about 30 seconds long.

Is anyone else experiencing BH contractions that are 1-2 minutes long?

Today I have been in complete and utter misery with how often the BH contractions were hitting.  Even now I am trying to sleep but the baby is rolling around like crazy and it feels like he's trying to scratch his way out.   I am so ready for this pregnancy to be over with!!

Re: BH Length

  • I'm almost 38 weeks and had BH for the past 6 weeks; always been longer than 30 seconds. I just have to keep reminding myself that theyre just BH unless they get super intense and painful.

    Good luck!

  • Unless I'm mistaking them for something else, mine have been from 2-10+ minutes long.  I guess it's partly the uterus toning itself.  But, anyway, sounds like a good sign for you.

  • You may be experiencing 'real' contractions or prodromal labor rather than Braxton-Hicks, but the difference is minute enough not to matter.  I've been having contractions for a week or so that measure between 1 and 2 minutes and are strong on the monitor, but are in no way nearing a discernable pattern (time apart or distance - this evening of having 2-3 of them per hour is the closest it's come and they are still really irregular).  But as annoying and uncomfortable as it is, they are doing something - toning your uterus, perhaps beginning early dilation/effacement.  There is nothing wrong with taking some Tylenol Pm and getting some sleep.

  • Thanks for the input! Tylenol PM has become my savior this pregnancy and I usually try and take it on work nights.  My husband keeps suggesting I take Tylenol during the day because the pain gets more intense but I tell him it is just preparing me for the real deal.  I will definitely have to take something for work on Monday.  Luckily I have a NST, ultrasound and doc appointment on Monday so I can verify with them then.
