Hemochromatosis anyone?

The jury is out on whether or not this impacts fertility, and I'm hoping that it doesn't. But if you've been diagnosed, let's discuss what your doctor thinks. I'm curious.

Re: Hemochromatosis anyone?

  • Is this not what Baze's husband has?

  • Don't know if you remember me. I don't really post here much anymore, but I wanted to respond as I have hemochromatosis.

There is definitely a connection to infertility for men who have hemochromatosis. If you google it, you will find a lot of info. Also, Baze's husband has been diagnosed with it, so maybe she will chime in too.

As for women, none of my doctors have ever said there was a connection. I also could never find anything about a connection when I consulted with Dr. Google. I am skeptical, though, and still think there might be some sort of a connection. Our problem is mainly DOR and crappy eggs. I can't help but wonder if the extra iron in my body could have somehow affected my ovaries. If it impacts other organs, then it seems like it could cause problems with the reproductive organs too. No evidence for this, however, just my own theory.

Yes, I do remember you!  I am currently seeing a naturopathic doctor, and she doesn't believe this new diagnosis is impacting my fertility.  I am DOR and crappy eggs too, though, so I am like you in wondering.  I feel like I exhibit many of the symptoms, yet I definitely don't have the weight loss symptom-LOL!  I'm glad my doctor caught it now because it sounds like it can get rather scary if left untreated.

  • It took me a few days to get back here, so I am not sure if you will see this, but anyway . . .

I was lucky and mine was caught early too. It can be very bad when it isn't caught early.

When doing my google research, I could never really find much on hemochromatosis and female IF at all. It makes me think they haven't done much research on the possible issue. I wouldn't be surprised if once they do more research, they find a connection. It is interesting that we are both DOR (although we didn't start TTC until I was 37 so that may be age related for me). It would be interesting to know if other women with hemo also are DOR.
