Cameras...

I no longer have a real camera and I was thinking that I should possibly invest in one before baby arrives.  What do you think?  Any suggestions?  I'm not into photography or anything, nor am I great at taking pictures so I'm not leaning towards a $1500 Nikon.  Something nice easy and good.

Re: Cameras...

  • I have a DSLR and a point and shoot. I love my DSLR and use it pretty much all of the time, however I wanted something I could take with me on the ski slopes.

DH got this one for me for Christmas and even though it's not a DSLR, it's a really good camera. Bonus: It's waterproof- you won't have to worry about the LO breaking because it's also shockproof!

  • Sony makes a nice camera.  They are owned by Nikon (or vice versa) so they are kinda like a cheaper version of Nikon.   Also if you don't really care about the brand or age of the camera, check out ebay for deals on older model Canons, Sonys, and Nikons...  HTH!

  • DH and I have really liked out Olympus Tough.  We have the one that goes to like 30 feet, so it is more expensive, but my sister has the basic one and they take great pictures, and its really great to have something shock proof/waterproof with LO's around.

  • I have always had good luck with and love anything Canon. I have a DSLR and point and shoot that are both Canon.

  • i have a panasonic lumix and really like it. it's shock proof up to almost 7 ft so it can take a drop or ten and it's waterproof to 40 feet. that was important to me for when we go on vacation or to the pool. i use it mostly as a point and shoot but it does have some ability to tweak, and has some neat features like gps (it will label prominent sites - like saying which park you're in or that you're in front of a certain museum of whatever). i have have a larger canon that's a couple years older (not a dslr but similar size). i rarely use it because of the size, even though it's a better camera. for most of what i want, the lumix is great. i think it was under $400.

  • I LOVE my Canon DSLR, it's fabulous.  I don't think you can go wrong with a Canon or a Nikon and it definitely will be worth it when you're LO gets here.

  • I used to have Sony point and shoot that I really liked.  I realized as DD was getting older and never sits still it was much harder to get decent pictures of her with it.  I ended up getting a Canon Rebel t3i and I love it.  It was well worth the money.

  • We just bought this, and I am so excited to be able to take pictures of the baby! My little sister has this camera, and has used it to take senior pictures for friends (she is younger than me; in college), so I've seen proof that it can take some really great shots! :)

  • My SIL has a Nikon D3100 which is about $500 on Amazon. She love it and is so excited to be out of the point and shoot camera field.

  • I've heard good things about the Nikon 1. It's not big like a DSLR, but you can put interchangeable lenses on there. It's not much bigger than a point and shoot.

We have a Nikon DSLR (just bought it to replace our old Nikon D50 but I can't remember which one it is) and a PNS Nikon. I really like having both. We use the DSLR all the time and have the remote (very cheap accessory), tripod for family pics, and 2 lenses.  I also love the PNS to throw in my purse for birthday parties, zoo, museums....times when I want something small but better quality than my phone.
