Not sure if there was a post about this yesterday, but she shared a link on fb about chemicals that cause autism (and yes, it is as ridiculous as it sounds). Apparently she hasn't been on fb today because comments haven't been deleted yet. My favorite part is that someone referred to her H as "Captain Highlights"
Warning: if you have a loved on who is on the spectrum you might want to skip checking it out.

Re: Selfie has done it again (might be old news)
HA! Captain Highlights. He's been begging for a nickname like that. I have to admit, every time I see a pic of him I wonder if he chooses his own hairstyle or if she forces him to get highlights. I just don't know that many guys who still get highlights. Back in the 90s? Oh yeah. But 2012? It makes me think of Brian Austin Green circa 1992.
Glad to know her readers/followers are smarter than that.

Actually, the idea that chemicals or any environmental factor can "cause" autism is not that "ridiculous" if you have an understanding of genetics and epigenetics.

Of course this is just a theory and has in no way been proven, but I don't see what the harm is in discussing and researching these things further. Just my opinion.
That was pretty good. I liked that one, too.

I absolutely agree.
Makes me feel ridiculous that I'm kind of defending Selfie, but yea I guess I am. I'm avoiding pesticides and high fructose corn syrup. I don't think any of the 10 chemical listed in the articles are things you should necessarily be around all the time anyway. It might not help at all, but what will it harm me or baby to avoid it. Absolutely nothing. Some people are just too freakin touchy.
As someone who is around mild to severe autism every day, I am definitely trying to educate myself to give my child a better life.

I agree, in that I do believe toxins in our environment are likely a contributing factor to Autism along with thousands of other diseases and disorders that have climbed steadily in the last 5 decades. I also agree with avoiding chemicals, pesticides. high fructose corn syrup etc.. We have removed them from our lifestyle. But not just to prevent autism. To prevent a myriad of other health issues and help our bodies fight the auto-immune disorder I already have. Remove dangerous toxins from your body and homes? Absolutely a good idea. To do it purely to try to avoid Autism? Well, it seems to be missing the boat.
I think it's mainly because it came from Selfie that it lost credibility with many people. She's not known to be the most down to earth gal. At least not the way she portrays herself on her blog. I don't actually have a FB account so I haven't seen all of her posts there or the comments being made. I don't doubt some are very uncalled for, but if she wants to tread in the "what causes Autism" waters she better be prepared for a poo storm.
Feel the need to butt in here...
If you read legitimate medical research in peer-reviewed medical journals (Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, etc.) you will find that everything from obesity to anti-depressants to pretty much everything under the sun has been "linked" to Autism in "studies" at some point in time, but alot of these "discoveries" have not held up over time. A few years ago Autism was linked to vaccinations and then later that same doctor was convicted of fraud for falsifying his research data. The fact of the matter is that there is still alot of unknown. However, the one and only thing that has been established over and over again is that there is a strong genetic link. Further, there are countless fraternal twin studies of Autism where one twin is born Autistic and the other isn't. There are also increased rates of Autism in families. Thus, this leads one to believe that the cause is genetic and not environmental.
The leading cause of inherited Autism is Fragile X. Check out www.fragilex.org. This is a genetic disorder. It isn't caused by anything you did or didn't do. And it does get worse from generation to generation as the genetic mutation expands...which could contribute to an increased rate of Autism. But it isn't because of environmental factors.
As someone who worked in the Autistic community for many years doing behavior therapy and is married to a psychiatrist, things like this annoy me a little bit because it really isn't the entire picture. Autism rates are up, but alot of people are now being diagnosed who weren't 20 or 30 years ago...not just because of awareness and increased services, but also because the diagnostic criteria for Autism spectrum has expanded. Children are now being labeled in the Autism spectrum that would have been labeled something else in the past such as simply developmentally delayed or MR, etc. Thus, while I am sure that there has been a rise in recent years, I'm not convinced that it is as great of a rise as many people say.
In sum, I absolutely think that it is a good idea to limit exposure to harmful chemicals, pollutants and high fructose corn syrup, but I think it is premature to definitively declare that these things "cause" Autism. At the end of the day, none of us really know what causes Autism, but we do know there is a strong genetic component. However, I do agree as pp said that it certainly doesn't hurt anything to avoid many of these things.
Edited for typo.

I really appreciate the fact that you mentioned this, as it is so often overlooked. I can think of several individuals who I went to grade school with who would possibly be dx on the autism spectrum today, but 20 years ago were simply "different" or "socially awkward" - no medical label at all!
So completely off the subject of autism, who is this Selfie person? I have seen her mentioned a time or two before and get the general impression that she is not well liked. Who is she, where is her blog and what did she do to make everyone dislike her? I could use some juicy gossip.
