Taking things out of LO's mouth

I lurk daily but rarely post on this board, but I was wondering how you ladies handle this.

We have 2 cats and a non-shedding dog. My dog is awesome, but he loves to pull all the fluff out of his toys. Now that LO is mobile, she is obsessed with his toy fluff, and I'm constantly pulling it out of her mouth, as well as furballs and dust bunnies she picks up off the floor  (and we vacuum/sweep regularly!).

She just seems to like to chew on these things, which I'm sure is normal. And they're not really enough to choke on or anything. I don't even know if she'd swallow them. But she gets piissed if I try to take things out of her mouth- clamps her jaw, shakes her head, and cries. It seems like more trouble than it's worth to get a pea-sized piece of chewed-up fuzz out of her mouth (if I can even get them out of her mouth- sometimes she hides them and I can't find it).

How do you ladies handle things like this? Let your kid chew on stuff if it's not stuff that's likely to choke them or cause some GI issues? Or remove every piece of inedible thing on principle? Somewhere in between?

ETA: I'm not talking about choking hazards or things that are dangerous (cords, string, etc.). Of course I would take those out immediately.

  • Yes, I would remove it.  Toy fluff especially.  That stuff easily clumps together.  A small piece might not cause issues, but it she eats more it could clump in her belly and cause a blockage.

That's what I've been thinking, which is why I battle with her to get it out of her mouth. And even removing all the fluffy toys from the house, she still finds the fluff! You never know what that stuff's made of, or where it comes from.

  • We have a dog and a cat and a new rug that has been shedding nonstop.  :-)  We are teaching LO to open her mouth and say AHH so we can get out whatever fuzz she's put in her mouth.  We did this a lot when she was teeny tiny, to get her to open her mouth wider to nurse better....so she kind of gets it I think?  It doesn't always work.
