I feel incredibly stupid! I just left my baby propped up on a Boppy pillow (he can sit up pretty well with it usually but I've never just put him in it on the floor- usually on the couch beside me with my hand on him) on the kitchen floor! I was washing dishes and took my eye off him for a few seconds and next thing I know he is on the floor! I never heard a noise so I think he must have just scooted off of it. He cried for a solid 10 minutes while I was doing everything I could to console him. Finally the pacifier worked and now he is in his swing with me watching him like a hawk (yes for the most part I can type without looking). I called the ER and the nurse told me usually babies can fall that far and be just fine but I am still worried. He said to watch for a knot to come up on his head or for vomiting, but not to bring him in unless either of those happened. Please tell me someone else has done this and their LO has been fine!
Re: Has this happened to anyone else? I need reassurance here- I definitely learned my lesson today!!
Not with the boppy but my son rolled off the couch onto the floor when he was about a month old. I was so upset and worried he would have brain damage or something but he was fine.
I am lurking on the 3 - 6 board. My LO was involved in an accident where she fell from about 5 feet up and hit her head on cement. Yes, it was awful and we spent the night in the ER, but she was absolutely fine. What I am trying to say is - babies have really hard heads and are resilient. Unless they are acting completely abnormal like the ER nurse said, I wouldn't worry. He probably was upset from being scared, not injured. And, as the mom of an 8 month old, just get ready for more bumps and falls as they start navigating on their own.

Thanks everyone! I hope the above sentence is true for my DS! And I'm glad to hear all of your babies are healthy and happy!
hahah! Yup! My DS just recently fell of the couch *felt so dumb* he started rolling and stupid me thought I could keep him in his pillow seat lying down on the couch for a sec while I walked 5 steps to the kitchen to get a bottle and BAM! rolled onto my laminate floor he goes and whacks his head on the leather coffee table! THANK GOD for leather coffee tables or he would have for sure needed stitches! I couldn't believe how dumb I was but the nurse said he was fine and just to watch for concussion signs etc?I think I cried more than he did and really his was just from the shock rather than the fall I think! All I know is he is such a little mover and a shaker that I can't put him down in one place without watching him b/c then he rolls to another! haha?My mom said wait till he starts crawling like this above pp says! You can't wrap your house in bubble wrap so there will be MUCH worse falls and bumps as they start to move more so be prepared! lol..Dont feel bad! it happens to all of us and generally babies are made for this!
Yep x2!
At 5 months old, my DS rolled off a bed in a hotel in Mexico and smacked his head on a tile floor. It was his first time ever rolling, I didnt know he could! I took him to a Mexican ER because he cried for so long and threw up. So scary but he was perfectly fine besides a lump on his head, and he's a smarty pants 3 year old now!
Not totally the same, but on Friday my jogging stroller blew over in the wind with my DD strapped in. Luckily my stroller was sitting on wood chips at the playground where my son was playing, so she had a softer landing then if she was on the sidewalk. She has a bruise on her forehead but only cried for 5 minutes and is otherwise fine.
As a second time mom, I assure you. Bumps and bruises happen.. and happen and happen. When they are are learning to walk they fall like its their job. My son is a real 'rough and tumble' kid and his only injuries have happened doing something mundane like walking up our front steps (damaged his front teeth) and tripping on garden edging (stitches in his ankle) so nothing I could have done to prevent them. As a mom, just do the best you can!
I'll be the one to say "go in anyway"... DH was carrying DS his first day home from the hospital. DS is a "Wiggle Worm" (of course, was too young to know that yet) and somehow managed to wiggle just wrong and out of DH's arms he slipped. Completely a freak accident!! Sure there was the blood curdling scream but DS quickly soothed with the bottle that DH was bringing DS out to me to give.. He was also back to acting normal. The only reason we even took him in was because he also had a jaundice check and they told us "bring him in and we'll get that done at the same time".. We went in fully thinking "overly protective worry wart parents".. Instead... DS ended up having a fractured skull in two places along with bleeding on the brain. We spent 2.5 days in the PICU then another 2.4 on the main floor at Children's hospital.. Plus had the crap investigated out of us even though we both said it was a completely freak accident! (it didn't help matters any that the post partum hormones were setting in).. DS is fine now, but that is NOT how I wanted to spend my first week with my perfect little baby boy worried that he'd have to have emergency brain surgery!!!
As our ped said "STOP beating up on yourself, accidents happen, you don't get through parenthood without something happening at some point, all that matters is that you're taking care of it when something does happen"..
