Cloth Diapering

homemade laundry detergent

hello:  I make my homemade detergent out of the following...it lasts me for about 5 months and costs me a grand total of 12.00 to make

6 bars ivory soap, grated finely

6 cups of borax

6 cups of washing powder

I have recently read that borax is really REALLY bad for baby skin and I am wondering what you all have found (if there is anything safer to use that is effective with cloth diapers)

Re: homemade laundry detergent

  • I don't know about the borax, my current detergent is equal parts Borax, Washing Soda and Oxiclean Free. But I hope you haven;t already used your detergent on your diapers. My first batch of homemade included a bar of ivory soap... and after a little while repelled so incredibly bad. I mean, you could have made a rain jacket out of them. Soap isn't CD-safe

  • i have not used it to prep any of my diapers:  i am still waiting for my shipment :)  thank you for the heads up and I will make sure to find an alternative.  i am assuming that the oxyclean is CD safe

  • Any homemade detergent that uses soap is TERRIBLE for diapers.  The soap will clog the diapers.   Oxyclean is safe.   There is one recipe for 1/3 oxyclean 1/3 borax and 1/3 washing soda.  Just make sure you do an extra rinse to make sure all the borax gets out.

  • I was told to try borax as a water softener when I couldn't find Calgon in stores.  Still not having much luck with microfiber around here but I've not seen any problems with LO's skin.  But his skin isn't very sensitive.

Another friend told me about making detergent.  Where would I find washing soda?

  • i think the borax is okay as long as you rinse it out well, but yeah you don't want to use the soap! i made one with borax and washing soda and read somewhere that they were both bad for CDs, ugggh.. so i am just using that stuff for our clothes now.
