Natural Birth

Comfrey healing packs?

Has anyone here heard of these?  You brew Comfrey leaves and then put this "broth" into maxi pads to freeze and it is supposed to help heal post-partum.  My question is, does anyone know where you can find Comfrey Leaves??  I have witch hazel on hand to make something like this, but would like to try the natural route too....

Here's the "recipe"

1/2 cup comfrey leaves in cloth bag/cheesecloth
8 cups water

Bring to boil and simmer for 1 hour. Let cool then squeeze pouch
Comfrey broth remains

1/8 cup of broth per maxi pad freeze
Use left over broth in peri-bottle
C-sec:  3-5 per day for 7 days

with tear:  3-5 per day for 5 days

w/o tear: 2 per day for 3 days

Re: Comfrey healing packs?

  • I've used comfrey things pp with both births. My MW recommends it. As for where to get it, it came from our garden after J.'s birth, and our MW's garden this time.

We didn't follow an exact recipe. DH would throw some leaves in a small bowl in the microwave with some water. (I was on modified bedrest and couldn't get to the microwave.) Then we'd let it sit until it was cool enough to use.

When it was the right temperature, I'd wrap the leaves/broth up in gauze to make a comfrey gauze pack thing. Then I'd put it on top of my pad. So we didn't use witch hazel with it.

FWIW, I preferred warm things pp. That seems to be unusual from what I read here on TB. Everyone seems to recommend freezing things. But I much preferred the warm comfrey packs. And I even preferred warm to hot water in my peri bottle. But that's just me.

An herbal store will generally have what you need.  If not, it's easy to find on the internet.

My favorite sitz bath mix is:

1 part uva ursi leaf (Arctostaphylos uva ursi)
1 part shepherd's purse leaf, seed (Capsella bursa-pastoris)

1 part yarrow flower (Achillea millefolium)
1/2 part myrrh gum powder (Commiphora momol)
1/2 part comfrey root (Symphytum officinale)

    1/2 part sea salt (optional)
