I mean this is no disrespect to the people I have noticed do this...I am curious because I need to get my lo to sleep better in his crib.
I have seen many people mention rolling up sheets and putting them under the crib sheet, to create a box around lo so they feel more snug in the crib. How is this considered as far as sids goes?? I guess the blankets aren't loose...but they now create a bumper type barrier, right? or is that ok? Maybe if they were rolled and placed lower than lo's head?
Just looking for input on if I can try this safely! thx in advance! * (oh and my ds can roll over one way (back to tummy) and lift his head really well)
Re: Safety of blankets under the sheet?
When we were in the hospital with #1 the nurses would do this because he hated sleeping on his back, so they rolled receiving blankets and made a little nest so he felt more secure on his back. They didn't even put them under the sheet, but they did put them tightly around and below his head level.
I would say it depends on how mobile your baby is. Before they're really mobile at all (like still in the hospital) I think it's fine. After they're pretty mobile (like crawling) it would probably be fine too but unnecessary.
Since your baby is rolling back to tummy I'd worry about it because if the blankets shifted they could roll back to tummy and then get stuck. Does your baby prefer to sleep on their tummy? If so you could just let them roll over and sleep that way, but without other stuff under the sheets. Both my babies are tummy sleepers by nature so I allow it.
Personally I wouldn't do it although not necessarily for the safety aspect. It's just one more sleep aid that you'll eventually have to wean him from. I just got DS the Magic Sleep Suit and last night was his first night wearing it and first night sleeping without a swaddle. He did really well. I think it did an excellent job of letting him move his arms and feet but still giving him that snug feeling.
I don't think it will be too hard to wean him from the suit when the time comes because it's basically just weighted pajamas.
You do it by LO's feet not face and side. It's what thet do in the NICU to make them feel secure and is safe. I wouldn't do it when LO starts to move around all night.
This is the ONLY way that LO will sleep in his crib. We were transitioning from the RnP, and he HATES to sleep flat on his back- he's kinda starting to roll around- he can roll like a champ on the floor, but on the crib mattress he can only make it about halfway over, gets stuck and screams. I saw a bunch of other moms on here talking about the rolled up blanket trick, so I thought I'd give it a try. First night, he fell right to sleep and slept just like he did in the RnP.
I was nervous about it at first, because all we hear is how we can't put anything in the crib, but, I used a small blanket, so that when its rolled and placed in the U shape, it tucks under his butt and the top comes up to below his shoulders, so it's nowhere near his face. We also have the crib wedge, and it keeps him from sliding down, as someone else mentioned. His little "nest" keeps him from rolling- once I put him in there, I kinda tuck the rolled blanket in around him, and he is snug as a bug in a rug
Now, on a side note- we do have the AngelCare monitor, as well as an iBaby video monitor, so I feel that he is very well monitored- otherwise, I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable with it. But, it's working great for our little guy- he is now sleeping way better in the crib with this set-up than he ever did in the RnP!
oops so weird. made this siggy years ago before baby lol...somehow computer switched to that name.
anyways this was me. thx for the responses
