Gestational Diabetes Question

Hey! I am new to all of this, but enjoy reading all of your posts!! I was diagnosed with GD a little over a week ago, and I am currently 27 weeks. I saw my doctor yesterday for the first time since being diagnosed, and he said so far my numbers look great and that we would keep it diet controlled for now. I go back in 2 weeks and at that time they will look at my numbers again, they will go to meds first if needed and if that doesnt work they will go to insulin.

My only concern is my FASTING NUMBERS! My dinner numbers will be around the same, I will eat at the same exact time and eat the same exact same night snack and one morning my number will be 90 and the next morning it will be 103! My target is 95, so even when my numbers are higher they are not HORRIBLE.

I am testing as soon as I wake up. Do you guys think that could be an issue? Should I get up and walk around for 10-15 minutes before testing?

Also, I know everyones body is different but, what night time snacks work for you? I have tried peanut butter, string cheese and Ice Cream w/ peanut butter!

Re: Gestational Diabetes Question

  • How late are you eating the night before? If I eat late at night my numbers are higher in the AM.  I also rarely eat a snack before bed just because I am not hungry and it's hard for me to eat late at night.  Maybe you can find out if your nightly snacks are necessary?

  • Fasting are often the hardest numbers to control, and a lot of women find the nighttime snack doesn't have an impact on fasting numbers. There is something called the dawn phenomenon where you body starts producing glucose on it's own as you near morning to get your body ready for the day. That causes your blood sugar to rise, which is probably what is giving you those high fasting numbers. Keep eating your snack as they told you and testing as soon as you wake up (make sure you hands are clean, too!) and see if they have any suggestions for you at your next appt.

  • I am eating my snack between 9:30 - 10 then going straight to bed. I ususally test around 6, so around 8 hours later. Maybe that is the issue! I will have to try not eating a snack at all and see what that does! Maybe that will be the trick. Thank you for the suggestion! Big Smile
  • The GD nurse stressed to me eating a snack before bed and testing 8 hours later. I did that for a few weeks after being diagnosed and then I started getting heartburn once I went to bed so I stopped. My numbers were actually better without a snack at night. Everyone is different. Play around with it. I was told my fasting # was the one they would look at the most and whatever I found to keep it under 90, to stick to it if I wanted to stay off insulin. I am having a RCS in 2 days and I made it from 28 weeks to 39 without meds or insulin so I found what worked for me. Good luck!

  • I have a hard time figuring out fasting because my sleep schedule is so off. I go to sleep around 4-5 in the morning, so I don't even know if or how the dawn phenomenon would affect me.

I'm supposed to have 30g of carbs plus fat and protein before bed and ice cream was recommended. So I do ice cream and a cheese stick. The other morning I got 79, today I got 89. Same snack.

I'm supposed to be 60-80 fasting but at my first appointment a week after starting the diet, the doc said my all 80's fasting numbers were simply "borderline." I'll inevitaby be on insulin because it will be harder and harder to control. I'm fine with this; my only issue is that if I am well controlled with insulin, I will refuse an early induction (in the absence of any other issues).

  • I agree with a couple other replies - play with it.  Try eating your late night snack earlier and try to go to bed early?  If that doesn't work, maybe a late night snack could be something with more protein, like egg whites?

Here are some more suggestions I found...probably too many for me to list here!
