Ear problems

Search doesnt work for crap & I dont have the patience to dig through pages of stuff Ive missed since moving & being busy. Anyones baby get tubes? William gets them on the 10th of May, he's had fluid since shortly after being born & is on ear infection #7 since end of January. Im scared of him being put under & really not looking forward to the surgery but I know its whats best for him.

Re: Ear problems

  • Thankfully DS hasn't had a problem, but DD had chronic ear infections and got tubes at 10 months old.  We joke that it was the best parenting decision we ever made.  Surgery was really quick and she woke up after, nursed, and went back to sleep for an hour or so.  When she woke up you would never have guessed she had surgery.  She started crawling for the first time a couple hours after surgery and was completely back to normal.  She went from being at the doctors office every 2-3 weeks to not being seen for a sick visit for over a year!  I have heard some kids wake up crabby and really disoriented, but thankfully that wasn't the case for us.

  • We are on EI #5 right now.  I have a feeling if we will have the tubes conversation if we get EI #6.

Will they have to intubate him? If so, he might be a little hoarse.  That's what happened with Gabe's hernia surgery.  We had to stay overnight because of their "preemie policy" annoying.  But, he was fine.  Just tylenol for pain control.

DD is on her second set and DS will be getting them soon. He's had chronic ear infections. One took 2 months to get rid of. It's not bad at all. The prep work tatakes longer than the actual surgery. The difference is amazing! Good luck.

We think that Williams has been the same infection & not multiple. We stopped an antibiotic last Tuesday & when we saw the audiologist & the ent Monday both ears were infected.

Im really scared, its the putting him under part that really worries me. I cant wait to have him feel better though. He's never had 100% of his hearing & they said his speech delay & gross motor issues are because of the fluid so Im ready to have him feel better. He also doesnt sleep for crap because the pressure hurts him & he wakes up.

  • DD got tubes in February. I was terrified of her going under. From the time that she left my arms to the time she was returned to me was under ten minutes. It was truly that short! The worst part was after they give her back and I could literally smell the anesthesia when she exhaled. She was very disoriented and inconsolable but this only lasted until we got her into the fresh air.

She had an ear infection that was resistant to antibiotics and when the ENT put the tubes in he said there was lots of thick, infected puss that was most likely affecting her hearing. I am so happy we went through with it. She used to be cranky for really no particular reason and that has since stopped so I attributed it to her EIs.

If you want to know anything else, let me know!
