CIO after LO can stand?

we're planning to do more ferber once lo's teeth quit bothering him (3 teeth in 3 weeks). he goes down fine after a nursing, i burp him to wake him slightly so he's a tad awake and knows he's in the crib.

LO can stand now in the crib and i'm wondering if when i do the timed checks i should lay him down or just leave him standing and hope he figures it out.

if anyone has experience with this, i'd love to hear about it. i couldn't find where ferber said anything about this. my fear is that if he's standing it'll take him a lot longer to figure out he can just lay down.

thanks

Re: CIO after LO can stand?

  • I asked a similar question last week but with sitting. We had already sleep trained but once he started sitting, it kind of flew out the window. I was afraid of him just screaming for hours because if he couldn't figure out how to lay back down.

Other said they just let their LOs figure it out. I was nervous but we did it. The first night he cried 30 minutes. 2nd night 10 minutes. 3rd night and since, a few whimpers or nothing at all.

  • We are having a horrible time getting Alexa to sleep now that she can stand, she doesn't know how to get back down and just freaks out. We've been using a sleep sack so she can't get up which worked for a week, now she has socks on her hands lol. If he knows how to get down then I'd just leave him I think. I need to teach Alexa that it's not a terrifying near death experience to lay herself down.

  • I usually leave DD standing b/c she thinks it is a game if I lay her back down. Every 3rd time I go in (about 4-5 min apart b/c she disrupts the entire house at bedtime if I wait longer than that) I gently push her down on her bottom b/c I think it helps her realize how to get back down...who knows if I am doing it right though b/c she has been winning this game for about a week and a half.  At least she is down for the night once she settles, but on a few occasions, it has taken her about 45 minutes to go to sleep - it drives me crazy after a 13 hour day w/ 3 kids!!!!

  • When DS has the occasional rough night (like last night) it goes much more smoothly if I put him into his original bedtime position (on his back with his bunny)..he doesn't stand in his crib, but he will crawl all around, and just wail. I feel like when I do checks if I put him on his back he calms more easily. But that's just my experience. GL!

  • I had asked this same question and many people said to just let her CIO and she'd figure it out. But DD in her normal day to day pulling herself up she couldn't yet figure how to get down and it frightened her. So I would go in and lay her down and give her her taggie and give her a little butt pat and walk out. She would seemingly find herself back standing but I kept laying her down cuz I knew she had not figured how to sit down yet. But now that she knows how to sit down from standing and lay down I just let her stand.. eventually she lays down and falls asleep. If he can sit from standing, I guarantee he'll figure it out. :o))

  • We started this last weekend and I ended up having to do elimination CIO instead of Ferber because going in to lay her down made DD cry even worse.  With the elimination CIO I just leave her.  She falls asleep in some interesting positions but it has worked.  After 4 days she now goes in her crib for bed awake and falls asleep within 5 minutes without crying.

Since all LOs are different I would just try it, see if it works or makes things worse, if it makes things worse you might want to try the elimination CIO.

    Good luck!

this is us! so i think when we start up again i'll just leave him standing. thanks ladies. you have been a lot of help! DS can sit from standing. it's crazy how fast he goes from wake up to standing. it's like he thinks he has to stand in his crib if he's awake!

i really hope this works. i need some sleep!! he's been getting up every 2 hours for weeks. i know some of it is teeth, but in the back of my mind, i'm wondering what was wrong the last almost 9 months!! it's time mommy taught baby to sleep!!

  • I lay DS down.  Sometimes he stays down and settles faster, other times he gets back up.   I do notice now that his position (lying, sitting or standing) is usually indicative of how likely it is he'll go back to sleep without many/any checks.  I'll go in much sooner if he is standing up than I will if he is sitting, and I'll give him even longer if he is laying down and making a better attempt to self soothe.  DS is the type to get more pissed off by checks though, so I try to keep them minimal.
