I've been battling a nasty cold this week and have been going to work to try and be responsible and save my sick days. I'd been saying I didn't feel good at work but have been trying not to be too whiny because everyone there is completely slammed right now.
Well, last night/this morning my cough go way worse and I finally gave in and called in sick and by the time urgent care opened, I'd decided to just go to the dr. Turns out the cold I was feeling like a baby about is actually full blown influenza AND an ear infection AND they think I have whooping cough!!! They also decided to check me for strep. I thought I was current on my pertussis vaccine because I had a tetanus not too long ago, but I guess that isn't always true. I will find out for sure Sunday (I'm crossing my fingers no, this flu is quite enough) and then will figure out if I need to do the antibiotic treatment. For now, I'm off work for a week, I have five days of full quarantine, and I have to keep a close eye on my fever.
The good news is that the baby should be fine as long as I can keep my fever down, which I've been able to so far and my husband took the afternoon off work when I called to go pick up juice and all of my medication and get me something to eat! Felt so, so, so good to be able to come straight home and have someone else take care of the errands.
Check your vaccines, ladies! The dr told me this is a new, late-arriving strain of flu and in my state, pertussis is at epidemic levels!
Re: Not Feeling Like Such a Wimp
I agree- Good thing you got in to see your doctor! I had been feeling yucky since Sunday and finally went in yesterday and found out I had strep. I felt like such a wimp going in for it, but when there is something definite that is wrong and you need treated for, it really makes you feel like your complaints are valid! I felt no shame at ALL for letting my husband run errands last night and going to bed early!
I hope you feel better soon!
