help me burp my baby

I've tried many things. did what WildCatPrincess does, and the first time it worked. Every other time, not so much. I change positions, sitting, laying on lap, up, down, up again, roll over, over the shoulder, etc. Nothing works. Sometimes I can get her to burp after she's been laying flat for 5-10 minutes, but don't want to lay her flat right after eating for too long due to possible reflux. Light taps, to semi-hard taps, rubs, nothing seems to work. She burps at random times, some right after eating, some a half hour later. My mom can usually get her to burp, so she's on burping duty when she's around. I don't want it coming out the other end...I already give her simethicone, and don't want to make it worse. help?

Re: help me burp my baby

  • I've heard that sometimes babies just don't need to burp. I pat her back for a few minutes and if nothing happens, so be it. If she's gonna burp, it usually happens right away anyway.

Yep. Are you EBF? The lactation consultant told me to try and burp him, but he just might not have to and that's totally fine. She said sometimes EBF babies just don't burp or spit up much like FF.

This. DS never really burped. DD does almost every time, but if she doesn't do it, I don't worry about it.

I am so jealous. I have a very burp-y EBF baby. I can always get her to burp once if not TWICE after just the first breast. Sometimes I won't be able to get any more burps after the second breast, but it's rare. I guess my LO just loves to swallow air. Haha.

  • yes, I am EBF...but soon to be giving her a bottle from pumping, so I can get her used to it.

I guess for right now, I'll have to be satisfied with no burp after, what...5 minutes of trying? No idea. It's just confusing, that sometimes she burps fine, other times none at all, so I think she needs to every time.

    thanks, ladies.

  • I try to burp my LO after every feeding but she never does, she's burped probably less than 10 times ever. At the hospital they told me I didn't even have to try because BF babies don't usually need to burp.

  • Try bouncing baby up and down (lightly) on your leg. It usually works for me if I can't get her to burp any other way.

  • I FF and LO will hardly ever burp. She does get the hiccups a lot though and sometimes will spit up.

  • The only time DD burps is after a really long nursing session or a lengthy period of cluster feeds. Other than that, I've learned attempting to burp her was pointless...just another perk of BFing.
