Which helps more, walking or yoga?

Hi ladies. I take my dogs for about a 40min walk a day but was thinking about taking a prenatal yoga class twice a week. Which helps prepare your body more for labor, walking or yoga (or maybe both)! Just want some insight into what is best for my body and this baby. I have heard alot of women who workout alot have easier labor, is that true? Thanks for your insight ladies!

  • Just do both... It wouldn't hurt.

I do both and it feels great! Anything that can help with the labor process, I am good to go.

  • Ditto both. They are two different kinds of exercise. The yoga will help with flexibility and relaxation techniques. The walking will keep your cardiovascular system in check (better stamina during labor). Both will contribute to quicker recovery.

  • Agreed, the more you can do the better.  I run, do crossfit and take a prenatal yoga class.  The yoga isn't much of a workout but it gets me to focus on my breathing, stretch and just chill out.  Plus the instructor is a wealth of knowledge and its a great way to meet other pregnant ladies.

  • It was not true in my case, but I'm still very happy to have exercised during pregnancy.  I never went into labor and had to be induced at over 41 weeks.  I was running and doing yoga up until the day I was in the hospital.  After 65+ hours my induction failed and I had a c-section.

I also was induced and it ended up a c/s, but I'd definitely say that exercising during my 1st pregnancy (running, cycling, walking & some yoga) did help me bounce back quicker after delivery than I might have otherwise.

  • Thanks ladies! I am going to contuine walking up unitl d-day if I can but now I think I am going to sign up for some prenatal yoga to. I hope it helps with my lower back, I have an upside down uterus so I end to carry the baby towards my back so I am hoping it will help. I am not worried about labor but the fact that it will help me bounce back quicker after is a total plus:)

This!  I love my prenatal yoga because it helps with the aches and pains - but I find the prenatal yoga is designed to be more of a relaxing/restorative experience rather than a good workout.  So it is important to pair it with some cardio exercise.   I walk with my dogs in the local dog park and love it.

  • Like everyone said, I'd do both. I walked a lot during my last pregnancy (I ran during my first, but ended up spotting/bleeding after a run and it turned into a m/c). I also took a yoga class once a week and did a yoga DVD at home a couple times a week. Although I got induced, I ended up with a relatively short labor (about 7 hours) and a pretty easy delivery. Also, I think staying active during my pregnancy made it sooooo much easier to get back in shape afterwards. I always tell people the best thing to do to lose the baby weight is to exercise DURING your pregnancy.

  • I didn't do much working out while I was pregnant but I worked full time as a waitress and that was walking the whole time. My labor was pretty easy and I only had to push through 3 contractions.

  • Like most of the ladies on here I would suggest that you do both.  I have just started a prenatal yoga class and it is a great way to ease the aches and pains.  Two of my friends did yoga during pregnancy and were glad that they did.  Found that hips were more open.

The walking or other cardio is still important, and will help to keep your weight gain managable.
