My OB had Mentioned to me that my nips were on the flat side (never had any complaints before lol) and that this could be an issue with BFing. I think she mentioned something about putting some kind of cream on them to help make them more (for lack of a better word) pointy. Has anyone experienced this? Were you able to BF? Anyone know what product my OB may have been referring to?
Re: Flat Nips?
I have never heard of a cream to make them more pointy. I agree that the nipple shield can help. The only cream that I am aware of that is really safe while BFing is Lanolin or an all natural nipple cream like Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple cream (my preference). This cream is just to help keep them moisturized & soothed to prevent cracking, though.
Regardless, I believe a flat nipple may only be an issue for the first few weeks b/c your nipples seriously undergo a transformation from BFing. I think a nurse in the hospital mentioned I had that problem (being so overwhelmed with everything else, it's a vague memory!). Let's just say my nipples are far from flat now.
I'm not sure about the cream, but you should consider contacting La Leche League, or even going to meetings while pregnant. It is free and they can help you a lot. There are meetings all over.
I don't have flat nipples, but from what I've heard it does make breastfeeding more challenging at first for some people. Not impossible, though!
Here is some info from Kellymom.com. They are a great source for everything BF related.
