June 2012 Moms

induced mommas ???

So I have a couple more weeks until my 36 week u/s, but my doctor and I have briefly discussed me being induced around my due date, just due to a couple of things (GD, adema, pain, etc).

Obviously a lot will be determined by this next u/s, but I was wondering, for all the 2nd time + momma's out there, if you were induced:

1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

4. What was your overall experience?

TIA!

Re: induced mommas ???

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)? 39 weeks 1 day

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)? they found DS had a Echogenic Focus on his heart at 36w 5d (which is rare, usually it shows up at 20w and disappears by 36w), and his head was measuring 3%, abdominal circumference 98% and femur 40%.  My blood pressure was elevating, 140/70 instead of 120/60, and my uric acid was high.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?  I had been 3cm since about 36w so I went in at 5AM and they just used pitocin.

    4. What was your overall experience? At around 10:30 they broke my water.  At 2PM I asked for Stadol.  I was 7cm.  Finally around 3:30 they checked me again and said I was only 5cm and I lost it.  I asked for an epidural and received it around 4:30PM.  DS then flipped posterior and I had to get a bolus of meds and I couldn't move at all.  It was horrible.  I finally slept on and off for a few hours and was barely dilating.  The OB came in around 8PM and prepped me for the "you're probably headed for a c-section, 12 hours after your water breaking we want you pushing and you're barely making progress".  I guess at some point DS  turned anterior again (remember I was SO NUMB I couldn't feel anything) and finally started pushing against my cervix.  I started pushing around 9PM and DS was born at 10:19PM. 17 hours after I arrived at the hospital.  I had a 2nd degree tear and he was 8lb 14oz, 21 in.

    TIA!

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

  • I was induced just after my due date with baby #1.

Reasons:  GD (well controlled) and recurrent pancreatitis.

I was induced with cervidil.  No pitocin needed.  (FYI when I went in I was ZERO % effaced and ZERO cm dilated).

Experience was fantastic.  (I opted for an epidural, my plan all along).  Total time:  9 hours.

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

day before my due date 'cause my water broke

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

medical, water broke and didn't go into labor on my own

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

    pitocin

    4. What was your overall experience?

not the greatest but that was 'cause they messed up my epidural and it fell out and failed at 6cm and pitocin induced contractions are horrible! Luckily, I was able to get another epi that worked. Total labor was 12 hours and only pushed for an hour, both I've heard is good for a 1st baby. GL to you!

    1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?  41 weeks 5 days

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?  Past Due, with no progress

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?  2 rounds of cervadil, 1 round of cytotec, over a day of pitocin.

    4. What was your overall experience?  It was a horrible failure.  After 59 hours of induction, I finally got to 10cms and could push.  But, I was exhausted and weak from not eating.  The contractions were really painful, but never felt productive.  I just don't think DD or my body was ready.  Everytime they turned down the pitocin, my contractions would stop.  So, I was never in real labor.  I ended up with a c-section.

I know you have complicating medical conditions, but I didn't.  I really wish I had waited a few more days.

    1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

First one at 39 weeks, doc said the baby was "really big" but that he was 7.13 shows that he was wrong.  I think it was his convenience.  Second one at 41 weeks, I wasn't progressing and my parents were leaving the next week and they were there to watch my other son.

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

    See above, preference mostly.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

Pitocin both times, and also had an epidural both times.

    4. What was your overall experience?

I had a fine induction both times, and if these twins don't come on their own before, I will be induced again.  My first I was hooked up around 10am, had some pretty intense contractions and got the epi around 12.  And had him at 2:50 so just under 5 hours total (and maybe 20 minutes of pushing).  Second time, I was again hooked up at 10 and had my epi around 11, as the anesthesiologist was going into a c/s, and am glad I did as I had him at 12:20.  My midwife said I should be glad I was induced as I might not have made the 30 minute drive to the hospital.  I am only 10 minutes away this time :) but subsequent labors go more quickly so am super conscious of symptoms right now.  I had a super easy recovery with both, and found that when I started pushing, they turned down the epi and I was able to feel just enough to push productively.  I'd definitely do it again!

  • I was induced with both my girls so I will answer twice based on both experiences.

    1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

Ellie: 37 weeks exactly (wanted to take her out at 34 weeks but decided to push me to 37 to give her lungs a better shot)

    Olive: 36 weeks 6 days

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

Both girls I was induced because of Preeclampsia.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

Ellie: We started with cervidil at 6 pm, 6 am pitocin was started, no change at noon turned pit off to give me a break. pit started back up around 2, pit turned off cytotec inserted at 5 pm, water broke at 8 pm and pit started back up. She arrived the following morning at 10:46 am with help from the vacuum.

Olive: Already in labor when I arrived to be induced so the broke my water at 1 pm, Stalled at 4 due to scarring so pit was started up, and she arrived at 10:18 pm.

    4. What was your overall experience?

Ellie: It sucked mainly because my body was not ready and suffered a lot of complications.  I had what is considered a 2 day induction.

Olive: It was great and easy labor.

  • I was induced at 39 weeks 6 days for GD. I was induced with pitocin. I would never choose to have an induction, but realize it is a real possible since I have GD with this pregnancy too.  My body was favorable for induction, so all things considered I had an "easy" induction.  I had hoped to go pain med free, but the pitocin induced contractions I couldn't do it. I hope this baby decides to come on her own.

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

    40 weeks, 2 days

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

    Bicornuate uterus

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

Water broken at 8:00 am, pitocin started soon after, epideral at 12:30 (which didn't work, only numbed one leg)

    4. What was your overall experience?

My labor was okay until I was fully dilated.  At that point, back labor started and we found out that she was posterior.  I pushed for 3.5 hours and ended up with 3rd degree lacerations, an episiotomy, and vacuum.  Overall, my labor was fine, just the pushing was miserable.

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)? With #1, I was due July 22 and was induced on July 11 and had him that day. With #2, I was due July 11 and was induced on June 30 and had him that day. #3 was a spontaneous labor.

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)? No real reason at all for both times.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)? Both times my Dr broke my water and hooked me up to some pit.

    4. What was your overall experience? Both of those deliveries compared to #3's spontaneous delivery was a piece of cake and I much preferred their births over #3's. #1 was 8 hours long and involved: vacuum, forceps, 2 *failed* epidurals, lots of Stadol, and an episiotomy. #2 was 5.5 hours long and involved: vacuum, forceps, 1 *failed* epi, 1 epi that worked toooo well and I couldn't feel to push properly. #3 was 24+ hours long and involved: vacuum, forceps, 2 *failed* epi's, lots of Stadol, my BP tanked, I stopped breathing, lots conciousness, almost died, don't remember delivering the baby, yada yada yada... I could go on forever.

Short story is, I loved my inductions and I wouldn't mind being induced for this one but I know that's not going to happen. So when I do go into labor, I'm asking for pitocin to speed that shiiit up.

  •  1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)? I was a week three days overdue.

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)? I had high blood pressure the entire pregnancy.  They were worried about me going over with DS.  Even though I was on medication for my bp, it was getting higher as time went on.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)? They gave me two bags of pitocin in attempt to start labor on it?s own.  I also received cervadil for dilation.

    4. What was your overall experience?  I was in the hospital for two days and nothing was happening.  My son had not dropped into position and my contractions were sparse.  By the end of the second day, it was decided it was best to have a c section to get him out.  It was good and they discovered the reason why he did not drop was because he could not fit down into my pelvic area.  I thought, I?m a big girl?I got room.  Well no.  He was 14 inches from shoulder to shoulder, 10lbs, 3oz, 22inches.  Yeah that was not fitting lol.  I trusted my doc and DH was there, but it was a bit scary.  I felt like a failure because I couldn?t do it on own.  Now I understand why though.

I do not know what will happen with this one.
I want a VBAC, but I had GD this time.  Oddly enough, my blood pressure is great.  It all depends on her size and if I proceed into labor naturally.

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

I was induced a week early.

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

Because we were new in town and our only known childcare lived on the other side of the country. So my doctor agreed to induce so we would have childcare for our DD.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

I had pitocin and they used a bulb. It worked fabulously, but I was already slightly dilated.  Plus this was baby #2 so my body knew the drill.

    4. What was your overall experience?

It was the better of my 2 deliveries. I would do it again and will actually be talking to the doctor about doing it again since it was by far a better experience with better outcomes. I started medicine around 10am and had the baby by 9pm. I was quite comfortable throughout the day, so DH and I watched movies all day. It was such an easy experience that DD (age 2 at the time) was able to come hang out with us for awhile in the afternoon.

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)? On my due date.

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?  Medical reason - Gestational Diabetes.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?  Foley bulb the day before, then Pitocin for 15 hours.

    4. What was your overall experience?  I actually didn't think Pitocin induced labor was all that bad (I was up to 48 units at the end, which was 2 units away from my doc's max allowed).  I didn't get an epidural because I wasn't progressing and assumed I was going to need a c-section and preferred a spinal to an epidural.  I did end up with a c-section, but that was for failure to progress due to a fibroid that is impeding my cervix.

  • 1.  I was induced 3 days after my due date due to slight high blood pressure

    2. See above

    3. They used cervidil

    4. I had a great induction but I know many haven't.  I was given it at 11:00pm and DD was born at 9am.  Very fast and "easy" labor

  • 1. When did they induce you (how close to your original due date)?

I was induced the night of 38wk3d and had her the next afternoon

    2. Why did you get induced (medical reason, preference, etc)?

Pre eclampsia.  I would never be induced without a medical reason.

    3. How were you induced (what medical interventions did you use)?

3 doses of cytotec.  They place the 1/2 pill by your cervix to help dilate you.

    4. What was your overall experience?

Got a dose at 7pm, 11pm and 3am.  It took me from nothing to 3cm.  Then my contractions completely stopped at 7am.  We decided I would go home on bed rest and monitor my BP since it came down in the hosp. and I did not want pit or my water broken.  Doc agreed and was coming in at noon to discharge us.  We ate a huge breakfast while we were waiting.  Then my contractions started again around 9am.  I got on the exercise ball at 11am because I was sick of being in the bed and my water broke on its own at 11:20 am.  10-15 min later my contractions were 2-3 min long and 10-15 seconds apart.  I needed to push at 2pm and she was here at 2:58 pm.  I had no other interventions or medications besides the 3 doses of cytotec.  Thankfully my induction went very smoothly and DD was perfectly fine.  I was not favorable for induction AT ALL and was very worried how it would end.

  • I was induced at 38 1/2 weeks due to high blood pressure that was still totally fine and controlled with meds.  The doc just didn't want me to go to my due date for fear that the placenta would start breaking down.

They did 2 or 3 doses of cytotec overnight and then started pitocin at about 4am?  The pitocin did absolutely nothing, ended up being at the max for hours and didn't really do anything to make that baby come out.  I also was not in pain from it at all.  Kept telling them the darn blood pressure cuff caused more discomfort than the unproductive contractions I was having.  The doc broke my water at about 2pm and then finally progress started.  I ended up having one dose of stadol in my IV about 6pm because the baby had turned wrong and I was finally in mega pain.  That kinda knocked me out for about an hour and then he turned correctly again shortly after I woke up.  Ended up being ready to push somewhere in the 9pm hour and had him at 10:32pm.

I was glad to not have an epidural and hope this one just picks his own birthday since those drugs didn't seem to work their magic on me.  But they will again induce because of the BP (still controlled) and also now GD.
