Cloth Diapering

WTF california baby?!?

DD has had the runs for two days now so i went to target last night and bought more california baby calming diaper rash cream. they changed the look of the container, and a few ingredients (rosemary, phytic acid(rice origin), amino acid, and glyceryl caprylate).

well, when i changed her, she was pretty red so i put the cream on and she screamed so hard! she kept saying her bum hurt and was holding onto me and crying. i felt SO BAD because i thought she was in so much pain from being sick and her rash. then she settled down and went to bed. this morning, i skipped the cream because she didn't poop last night. well, at daycare today they had some of the "old" version of CA baby cream and put that on her so she was fine. but right before lunch they put the "new" kind on her and she did the same thing, screamed and cried and freaked out, so they wiped it off and she was better.

anyone else deal with a reaction to the new stuff? i am going to call them during her nap today but i'm surprised there would be much of a difference!

  • oh, and can anyone recommend another cream? DD is allergic to disposables so it has to be CD safe and not ordered online since i need it soon. thanks! :)

  • Have you tried just Coconut Oil? I've used EMAB, it was okay, but not great when DD actually had a rash. Right now I'm trying the Grovia Magic Stick. It seems to be doing better when she actually has redness.

  • How bad is it?

For right now, slather her butt in olive oil.  That's an immediate quick fix everyone has! Coconut oil is also highly recommended, I'll be using that next.

If she's really bad, she NEEDS a cream.  Method is good enough, but honestly, we use triple paste with fleece liners.  It's not CD safe, so I got a remnant of fleece for $1.99.  That made a few liners and a TON of wipes.

  • oooh thanks! i don't have coconut oil but i do have olive oil. it's not the worst rash she's ever had, just bright red and looks uncomfortable. maybe i'll pick up some fleece after her nap and try some regular cream. thank you :)

  • Yup, She was crying and thrashing about for a little bit after I put it on. I usually just use CJs butter, or coconut oil, but sometimes when she is really red I use the CA baby.
  • I also use coconut oil.  If he has a bad rash I give him a baking soda bath.  Just put bs and water in the kitchen sink and make sure it is dissolved or it can hurt.  I just have him sit in the sink for a few minutes no need to rinse. I have also used 1t of bs in a bowl of water to wet washcloths to pat the area and let it air dry.  That method is good if we have to be away from home and he has a bad rash.

Good to know, thanks!  DD gets bad diaper rashes around her "girlie's" as DH calls it when she is teething.  I'll try this next time because I hate having to buy sposies and slather on Desitin or A&D every change.

I use Burt's Baby Bees Diaper Rash Cream and it is OK, CD safe, I use a liner if I have to put it on heavy but if I'm just doing a light coat then I don't use a liner.  You can find it at Target, BRU, BBB, and the like.

Good luck, I know quite a few women on the EFF board were pissed a couple months ago about CA Baby changing their ingredients in most of their products a few months ago.  I have never thought it was worth the extra price though.

  • My baby recently had a rash due to the runs as well and it was pretty bad too. (broken skin, screaming at every dipe change) The things that worked best for us were:

    - Triple Paste Wash. For bathtime we used this instead of her J&J lavender stuff.

    - Coconut oil. We put this in her bathwater and rubbed it all over while she was still in the tub. I saw a difference overnight.

    - Aquaphor. Def not CD safe so you'd have to use a liner, but it helped a lot.

    - Nekkie time. We put puppy pads around everywhere in case of accidents and let DD roam free for a while between diaper changes to be sure she was totally dry.

    - No more wipes, cloth or disposable, until the rash was gone. Our pedi told us that wipes and wipe solution could irritate the rash even more. So at every diaper change we took her to the bathtub and rinsed her off (a pain but it kept her from screaming) and at daycare we gave them paper towels (the non-textured Viva kind that are very thick) and had them use only water on the paper towel. We also had them use a second paper towel to dry her off with before putting on the cream and diaper. We also made them change her every hour, instead of every two hours.

    - Balmex and Destin Maximum Strength. Also not CD safe, but we started using both of these once the broken skin on her rash was healed. They helped clear the rash up the rest of the way.

I have the same issue. My DD freaks out just when she sees the tube now :(

  • Im in love with coconut oil! We got some organic oil from trader joes (which is actually more of a candle looking thing that when you touch it, it softens up.) DD has had a yeast looking rash for about 3 weeks. We were using antifungal cream her pedi gave us with regular diapers, which only made it worse.  The first time the cream went on her booty, the redness immediately calmed down. Within about 8 hrs, the rash was completely gone.  The sales lady also said people put it in their hair and skin as a conditioning treatment as well as cook with it.  HTH!

This!  Love me some aquaphor!  Also we use gauze pads and water at day care and rinse her bum at home when her rash is really bad.

Poor girl!  I hope it clears up soon!!!

  • thank you so much for all the suggestions! :)

  • I love Motherlove Diaper Rash and Thrush Ointment. You can buy it at Whole Foods. It clears up redness usually with just one application and it is olive oil based and CD safe. It's expensive but lasts a looong time.
