Hi all.
I'm sort of beside myself this morning. Our day care provider (in home) has been cloth diapering for us for over 9 months. My son is 18 months old. Yesterday, she sprung on us that she "hates" the cloth diapers. She says the stink up her living room, even from the wet bag we provide each day. She says they're bulky and pulling them to get them on him tight enough hurts her hand because she has some sort of joint problem. She says she will do what we want, but I'm feeling a lot of pressure from her to switch him to disposables, which I REALLY don't want to do. We've spent a lot of money building our stash over the last year and a half, and I do not want the added expense of disposables. Plus, I don't want disposable, chemically stuff next to my son's skin. And, I don't want to contribute to landfills with disposables.
I really am at a loss here. She's a great day care provider in all other respects and I don't want to risk losing her. Does anyone on here use GroVia with the disposable biosoaker inserts? Do you think that might be a reasonable compromise? I don't love the idea, but I don't know what to do. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or advice you guys have. Thanks!
Re: CD/Day care issues. Need advice!
Hi- I'm just starting my CD and haven't officially started in daycare yet. My daycare's policy is I have to provide a diaper genie that the dirties can be put in and then I take home the "garbage" bag everynight. I haven't tried it yet, but I am thinking it must have worked at one of their facilities for them to tell me to do that. It's worth a try because it might do a better job of containing the smell.
My plan with daycare is to use the hybrids with the snap in inserts-Best Bottoms and Grovia. Do you have any diapers with the hook and loop closures? Maybe they would be easier for her to put on than the snaps? If you don't have any, maybe you could purchase some just for during the work week/daytime to make it easier for her. It wouldn't cost as much as getting all new AIO because you would only need like 4-6 shells and enough inserts for the day. Or is there a possibility of using prefolds folded with a slip on cover? I know your lo is a bit older so I don't know how well the absorbency would be with a toddler.
Other than that I don't have any suggestions. Hopefully some of the pros can throw out some suggestions. I don't see how disposables would help her much more as far as arthritis goes.
WHAT?? If her joint problem is being affected by putting a diaper on, then she probably shouldn't be doing it. Exactly how much effort is needed to snap a diaper on? Would velcro help?? I don't know it seems a bit ridiculous. Our apt smells from sposies that DD uses at daycare while we never had a problem with cloth. It seems like she needs to potty train your son and that will solve her problem.
I agree...I think the whole thing is ridiculous. We have a number of Velcro diapers that I always make sure to send with him. We only send diapers with snaps when we run out of clean ones with Velcro. I would say she gets maybe 4 diapers with snaps a week! The rest are Velcro.
The diaper genie is an interesting idea. I can suggest it to her. The other factor here is that every so often my LO gets a diaper rash, and she is convinced it's from the cloth diapers, which it's obviously not! It happens when his stool is loose because of teething or whatever other reason. He's a baby...babies get diaper rashes sometimes! Ugh. When he does, we put him in Nature Babycare disposables for a couple of days so we can use diaper cream with zinc in it, and it clears right up.
I'm so frustrated.
What kind of wet bag do you send? I hate my planet wise ones. They totally stink even when zippered, I am so embarrassed to send them to daycare I am getting new ones because I think it's unacceptable, too.
We send a zippered planetwise bag, and have had no issues.
If you're sending aplix diapers, they shouldn't be ANY different for her to put on compared to disposable.s
I said this exact same thing to my husband last night! I don't see how it's any different than putting on a disposable. I am baffled, frustrated, and rather disheartened by all of this.
To the previous poster, we have a bunch of different wet bags...one planet wise, a couple of monkey something or other...don't really remember. I just bought some new ones since ours are getting old. Perhaps the PUL is warn down and they're not containing the smell as well as they used to.
*sigh* I'm at a loss.
How does she dispose of the disposable diapers from the other children, maybe that is contributing the stink? Our day care provider wraps any dirty diapers in a plastic bag before stinking it in the wetbag. Maybe you could try putting a cloth wipe with some essense oils in the wet bag to help with the stink.
I also agree that the aplix should be as easy as a disposable.
