I tried it for a few nights (modified--when his cries got super intense I'd go in regardless of how long it had been). It didn't work and he wouldn't fall asleep on his own. I voted SS because he does STTN, I'm just trying to get him to go down on his own instead of having to rock him forever.
I voted SS - mainly because E is a good sleeper on his own and for now I am OK with the few issues he does have (occasional wake ups and need paci/rocked to sleep). Each week he is getting better, so no need to CIO yet. I won't let him CIO until 6 months if these issues don't go away on their own by then.
I'm not a fan of CIO so we were going to try to No Cry Sleep Solution. The day the book arrived from Amazon, C started STTN. She's been doing it every night since then. We're just lucky.
I voted he STTN on his own. But its not entirely true. He either nurses to sleep, or I hold him for 10 minutes after he eats (no rocking, shushing or giggling). After he is sleeping I put him in his crib and he sleeps 9pm-7am (6:00 the days I go to work). And he doesnt wake up during the night.

I voted SS because we did modified CIO with DS and it worked by the second night with very, very minimal crying. Turns out, we were probably stimulating him with the methods that we were trying to use to soothe him (rocking, bouncing, walking around the house, shushing, singing, etc.). Just letting him do his own thing was ultimately all it took.
With DD, we tried modified CIO and the first night was TERRIBLE. But once she did fall asleep, she slept for 6 hours before waking to nurse. The second night was easier and she slept for 8 hours. Then she got sick and she's been sleeping terribly since then. I think we'll try modified CIO again in a few weeks, but right now we're not ready to try again.

I voted STTN on his own but am in this same boat. He needs some rocking but significantly less than when he was a nb. I've been able to put him down drowsy a few times also recently so I think there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I voted SS. I would not say I would NEVER try CIO but I haven't yet. And no, LO is not sleeping through the night. It wasn't a big deal, but now I am back at work it is becoming more and more difficult. We'll see how long she keeps waking at night. She is wearing me out!
