Well that was..fun. VENT

I had the WORST appt. yesterday with my OB. I had a c-section with DD almost 8 years ago. I told doc that I wanted to try for a vbac this time. She just had a blank look on her face. After she snapped out of it, she asked me why I had a c-section in the first place. I told her that my previous OB said that I my epis. sight had healed bad (whatever that means). Then it really went downhill. I started to tell her that I also tested positive for group B strep. But when I got to the "tested positive for" part, she interrupted and blurted out "Herpes?" ummm... SAY WHAT???? I was floored!! (And fyi, NO I do NOT have herpes!) I said "No! Group B strep!" Her face turned bright red and she apologized and kept talking like that just didn't happen!! WTH!!! I was soo pissed and offended that she would even say that! So besides the fact that she didn't seem very receptive to the idea of a vbac, even though I'm a good candidate for it, the whole Herpes fiasco just really took the cake. I've only had 3 appts with this nut and I'm now considering switching to another OB in the same practice who is very pro vbac. gaahh what to do?!Confused

  • I had a really shitty doctor experience and switched and I'm so glad I did. Sorry she said that. That's embarrassing and rude. Hang in there.

  • I would switch if you are not clicking or if they don't support your desire for a vbac. You need to feel comfortable... Good luck!

  • If you're not comfortable with her, then switch... but in her defense, it's not common to schedule a c/s because of a positive Group B Strep swab, yet it's VERY common to schedule a c/s when mom is positive for herpes.  So try not to be offended by that part; while she shouldn't have interrupted you, it was actually a logical assumption, medically speaking.

You might want to check office policy, though - mine *strongly* discourages switching docs within the practice, although I can request to see docs other than my doctor of record at appointments (and ultimately, this LO will be delivered by whoever is scheduled to be in the OR on the day of my repeat c/s).  What happens if you switch now to the pro-VBAC doc, then go into labor and the "nut" is on call?  Will she support the VBAC plans in place, or push for a repeat c/s?  If those are the only two docs in the practice, you might want to stay with the one you've got and get her on board with your VBAC plans, knowing that the other doc is pro-VBAC if you go into labor when she's on call, kwim?

  • Thanks, ladies. all of you are right. I'm going to see about switching to a sane professional doctor. I can't imagine what will come out of her mouth next appt.! Unbelievable.

Dh said the same thing about the assumption part. I get it but still, it was embarrassing. Also, there are 8 doctors in the practice. So I'm hoping not to have to worry about her being the one to do it. back in the day, they made us see all of them at some point because of the chance of our ob not being on call. But my current ob was not part of the practice back then. I will have to look into their policy. I actually had pro vbac doc as my ob with dd#1, 10 years ago. She had no openings for months when I made my first appt. So I kind of picked current ob on a whim because she was open a lot sooner. That's what I get for being impatient. lol

  • If I was in your shoes, I'd definitely switch. You want a good relationship with your OB and after what you experienced, I think your current OB is nuts! GL!

  • I just switched from my OB to a midwife today.  It wasn't even so much that we didn't click, as I am almost halfway through my pregnancy and I still haven't even met him!  Every time I go, I waited for almost an hour, and then ended up seeing an NP.  He obviously had way too many patients, so I switched, and am SO happy I did.  It'll be a relief if you really don't want to be with your current OB.

Oh holy crap this.  So much this.  Definitely switch.  Like, right now.  And be sure to tell them EXACTLY why you're switching.

  • I would be looking for a new OB/midwife pronto.  I had a c/s also for "failure to progress," which in hindsight could have been avoided for many reasons, but I wont go into detail.  My OB said while in recovery "you'll be a great candiate for a VBAC" and said the same again at my 6 week PP apt.  Fast forward 2 1/2 years and I see her at my first appointment and she is not so gung-ho on the VBAC at all now.  Because of this I am switching to a midwife that only does VBACS at the same hospital I had DS (which is fantastic and I love), so I will still have the option of an epi if I want and will be in the hospital should I need a c/s quickly.  I don't know if that is an option for you, but after doing a lot of research and talking to a lot of local moms who have done VBACS I really think in my case the midwife is my best chance at having a VBAC.

  • My only question is if you switch, since it's still in the same practice, is there still a chance that this yahoo could show up to the delivery?

I feel the same way about my c/s. In retrospect, I honestly feel it shouldn't have happened. None of the reasons I was given to have one seemed severe enough to actually warrent a c/s. And if my epis. site healed that bad, I would imagine someone would've told me prior to me being weeks away from giving birth! I also did a lot of research on vbacs and I can't find one reason why I wouldn't be able to do it. And OB didn't give me any reasons why she thought I couldn't. She just said that medically speaking, the pendulum keeps swinging back and forth as to whether women who've had prior c-sections should keep getting them for future pregnancies or if they should attempt a vbac. And that means what, exactly?? That you only do what the friggin medical journals are going with this year?? Idk, I'm really annoyed by the whole experience. Hopefully they don't give me a hard time about switching.

  • If you really want to VBAC I think it's important your practice is 100% on board. I switched at 32 weeks last pregnancy because I wasn't getting the answers I wanted and I'm SO SO glad I did. While my birth wasn't perfect, none are, I had a successful VBAC and I'm confident that my MWs will do everything in their power for me to repeat that again.

Yes there is a small chance that she would be the one on call. Which upsets me but since there are soo many in this practice, I'm seriously hoping that she isn't the one. Whoo the anticipation of seeing who walks into my room will be INSANE!! What a mess. I'm just going to stay positive about this. Well try to anyway. lol

  • Ladies I just want to say thank you for your input! I feel completely validated by your responses and I am going to insist that I get switched to pro vbac OB. I will keep everyone posted on what happens. Thanks again
