Hysteroscopy questions

I had a hysteroscopy done about 11 years ago but it was done at the same time as my laparoscopy so I was put under. My RE wants me to do another hysteroscopy before IVF next month and I will be awake for this one. I am actually getting it done tomorrow. Has anyone else done the procedure awake? What was your experience with it? My dr said that my cervix will be numb and I will be given a pain killer but I have a feeling this is going to be very uncomfortable.

  • I had a hysteroscopy done right before I began IVF as well. I was awake and took some advil before I went it. It wasn't that bad. My RE did clean my inside bits up a little and that was uncomfortable but not anything I couldn't handle. Plus, it is pretty quick. GL you will do just fine! Its all worth it.....:-)

  • There are two forms of the hysteroscopy. With my OBGYN I had one that was very painful they completely filled my uterus with fluid... a couple of years later I had one with my RE and it wasn't too bad - just felt like bad period cramps. At the time they told me the name difference between the instruments stating that my OBGYN still used the 'old fashioned test'. I am sorry I cannot remember the difference in the name. Maybe someone else could shed some light as they both called it a hysteroscopy (not a saline u/s).

  • I had mine done at the REs office a few weeks ago.  I took 4 Ibuprophen and a Valium an hour before the procedure.  RE did a mock ET before the hysteroscopy and while I was asking if the scope would feel the same going into my cervix, she said "look at the screen".  They had already inserted the scope and I didn't even know.  So for me, there was no pain involved at all.  I didn't even have any cramping afterward, but was told that if I did, it would be similar to AF type cramps.

    Good luck!

Wow! that's good to hear! I plan on taking a few advil before the procedure and hopefully things will go well! I noticed that you are doing your first IVF also. When do you start your stims? I am on BCP until May 8 then I start Lupron until AF arrives.

Do you mind if I ask how you scored the Valium? lol Seriously, though...did your RE offer it to you before the HSC or did you have to ask for it prior to your appt? I had an awful HSG and am afraid I'm going to work myself up prior to the HSC and be freaked out.

  • I've had 2, one that I was awake for and one that I was under for. I didn't find it to be too uncomfortable at all. Although, I had it done right after an endometrial biopsy, so anything compared to that feels like a piece of cake! I felt some pressure, but no pain. I wouldn't worry too much! Good luck! =)

Sorry this reply is late.  I start stims tonight.  Yay!  Last BCP was on Sunday and my protocol doesn't include Lupron.

I asked my RE if they could give me something to calm me down.  I had an awful experience trying to get an IUD once and nearly blacked out, so I was a little nervous about this procedure too.  They had no problem writing the Rx for it.  It's also something the automatically prescribe for the ET too, although after this last experience I'm not sure it would be necessary.

Thanks! I may talk to the nurse when she calls me next week to see if she thinks it would be a good idea due to my HSG experience. I find that the more anxious and tense I am the worse these type of things go.
