Babies: 9 - 12 Months

pre-nap routines (11 - 12months)

I was just wondering what kind of routine you have for your LO to get ready for their nap at this age? How do you transition from playtime to sleep time during the day?

I usually sit in the rocking chair with DS and hum him songs until he gets drowsy then I put him in the crib.  Lately it's been taking 25+ minutes to get him sleepy.  He is distracted by everything. He'll start playing with my necklace, buttons on my sweater, my hair, trying to look over the back of the chair, etc.  Now that he is getting older I think we need to change up our routine so I'm looking for ideas.

Re: pre-nap routines (11 - 12months)

  • Pray. Honestly... I dread naptimes because unless we're in the car, she does not want to fall asleep for naps. Our daycare provider rocks her to sleep, which basically f's things up for us on the weekends because we refuse to rock her to sleep so we kind of have to start from scratch w/trying to help her self soothe. Evenings are easy but naps are hell. I'll try rocking and reading some to wind her down to see if that helps though. I'm interested to see others' responses.

  • We went to a set nap schedule when we had to do ferber for naps, so DS is generally sleepy when we start our routine, but he goes in his sleep sack, then we read a book, sing a song and in the crib he goes.   Our bedtime routine is pretty much the same so the good sleep associations helped a lot.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • We're a bit younger over here, but we dim lights in her room, do diaper change, sleepsack, read 2 books (same ones every nap - different from night), and in her crib with her blankie.  She's asleep within 10 minutes.  We haven't done the drowsy thing since sleep training but the minute we dim the lights she starts rubbing her eyes.  We've also been on a fairly set nap schedule ever since we sleep trained.  2.5 hours after waking for day and 3 hours after waking from first nap.

  • DD would be the same if I tried to rock her.  Once I see her getting sleepy I ask her if she's ready for a nap, pick her up and take her upstairs.  She usually puts her head down on me.  I put her right in the crib and she usually goes right to sleep.
  • We've been doing the 2-3-4 routine and it seems to be working really well for DD.  2 hours after she wakes we go into her room and read 2-3 short stories in the glider and then I put her in the crib with her paci, lovey, and seahorse.  She's usually out in 10 minutes or less with no fuss lately...knock on wood.  Then 3 hours after she wakes from her first nap, we do the same routine for the 2nd nap.

  • Not much of a routine. She is only consistent for a morning nap. When we see her getting tired, we usually give her a snack in her high chair (usually yogurt), change her, and put her in the crib with her lovey. She loves playing in her crib so she will usually play in there for about 20-30 minutes before she goes to sleep. Most days she sleeps for about 2 hours though. She just needs to unwind by herself.

  • We don't really have a routine, but she is pretty predictable with her morning nap.  Around 9:30 she will start to get fussy so I feed her and rock her to sleep. I do the same if she wants to nap in the afternoon, but most of the time she only wants one nap.

When she starts getting cranky, we go up to her room, read a book in semi darkness. Close the shade, fan on, put her in crib, tell her it's nap time, pat on the butt. She is out in a few mins.
